Hi 9999;
I'm about to do 8" apes. I'd be interested to hear how much you extended the switch wiring for your Wild1s.
I've been told I shouldn't have to extend mine.
Hey Confortably Numb, I had the Wild1 518s and they told me that everything should work but they were wrong. May have to do with the previous owner didn't extend the right-hand control wiring. (Left side already had an extra 7 inches). I added 7 inches but it doesn't matter how much you add as long as they are long enough. Too much is ok. I originally went with the 8" apes but at 5'7" they were to far away from me. If it didn't require changing all the cables I would have gone with the 12" apes.
Mine are the the Wild-1 chubbys 12.5" I used +6" Idel & Throttle cables, +6" Brake line, and for the first year I was running the Apes I had +6" Clutch cable. The Cable was alittle to short for sharp turns and it ended up geting streched out and fraing real bad and one day it wouldn't disingage. So I ended up going with a +8" cable and and all is good now. Like anubisss said longer cables will work alot better then the shorter ones.
I dont know how much longer flhrci cables are but I know they are different from others. I was able to put apes with 8"rise no additional length required to cables, hoses or wires. Just went to an 18" ape and added 10"to cables 14" to wiresrun internal, and had to reconfigure brake all together. stock riser clamps too weak though need suggestions.
That's the clamp I used. It does need some modification though. The chrome riser cover won't fit over it until you drilldeeper the front bolt holes to allow the socket head bolts to sit lower.
I am about to put the 12.5" apes on my bike too. I asked the same question but only got 1 response. Thanks RKC9999. I called wild1 and was told +6 on idle/throttle/Brake +4 Clutch. Now reading these post I will go +6 on all and maybe +8 onthe clutch too or buy the bars and measure. But I agree with Anubisss more is better.
Oh answering the original post, go stainless on the cables Sterling Magnum Chromite III, change the grips, chrome the levers, chrome master cylinder, chrome clamps, chrome switch housing, and run the wires inside. My project will be done in 3 months.....I gotta get a grill for my wife's SUV as well.
