Does anyone use a tank bag. If so, is it a tie down or magnetic. I am planning a long distance trip and want convenient storage. Please throw out any advice for other forward storage ideas (ie for cell phones, maps, wallets, ect.) I also have a windshield pouch.
I started a post about this a while ago, but was met with many posts informing me that I would ruin my paint. I used tank bags on all of my other bikes prior to my harley. they are very useful. I always like the magnetic ones as they are easy to put on and take off, but I did lose one on the freeway one time. It was a disaster. I hate the buckles and crap. Just a PITA...Let me know swhat you find about one for a Harley. I didn't want to cover my speedo and stuff so I never got one.
I have used the same Eclipse Tank Bag for 26 years. It has been on 3 metrics and two H-Ds, an FLHS and my 07 Ultra. It uses a harness and a neoprene pad, and I have never experienced any paint damage. To be honest it doesn't fit the H-D tanks as well as it fit on the metrics, but it still worked just fine. If you have a tank mounted speedo it will cover the speedo. I do not leave the harness in place unless I am using the tank bag, and I only used it on the FLHS for long trips. I mounted it on the Ultra just to see if it was usable, but doubt that I will use it since the Ultra has so much storage already.
Not used one on my Harley, not really needed on an Ultra.Have however used them on other bikes, there are a few things you need to consider:
[ul][*]make sure access to the fuel filler cap is easy, real pain if it takes ages to remove/re-install at each fuel stop[*]always check the tankbag base is clean every time you install it so you don't harm the paint[*]check if it will reduce your steering lock or hit the switchgear. I nearly dropped a Suzuki when the tankbag hit thekillswitch and stopped the enginewhilemaking a tight right turn[/ul]
