There will be absolutely no issues when drilling out the rivets. Just do two things....use a brand new bit and bend the rubber gasket back enough so the side of your bit does not nick it as you drill the rivets. If it nicks it a little, no big deal. You don't have to push hard on the bit to cut through the soft rivets. So take your time.
I had my wife helping me when I was doing this. Oh yes, you can do it by yourself as many have, but you are taking a big risk when you do it by yourself. You can really screw up a lot of expensive parts if you lose control of that tour pak lid while installing these hinges.
It's all worth the effort. They look great and are a 1000% improvement over the pressed stock **** that they continue to install on $35K CVOs. Unbelievable.
Wen I out mine on what was a PITA was not the hinge side. The side with the lock is what go me. I had to take the lock apart because I wasn't smart enough to take a pic of it before I started. I had to have a buddy send me a pic of his. I also bought some stainless screws from Ace on the lock side. Don't worry about the hinge side. Just drill it and be done with it. I definitely did not take 6-8 hours and I had quite a few beers.
Your first mistake is that you are trying to apply logic to HD manufacturing decisions. What the hell are you thinking? Enjoy the new hinges and move on.
Can you imagine what a great motorcycle Harley Davidson Company would be if they listened to the CUSTOMERS they serve, instead of the pencil neck geeks who run their R&D and marketing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did you have any trouble drillling out the rivets on the original hinges ? I really like the look of the premium hinges
I just changed mine a couple of weeks ago. Use the drill size suggested in the instructions. You will likely have a few of them spin as you drill them, but you'll make it work eventually. What I ran across was that there didn't seem to be any instruction to use that drill bit to bore through the holes in the plastic. But you must do that for the new hardware to fit. The original holes are just too small.
Another mod I did at the time was install a second retracting cable stay to the lid. All it took was drilling a second hole in the lid bracket beside the reel and mounting the second one reverse from the original. I used a longer bolt on the right side of the mount for the little padded curtain under the passenger backrest to attach the reel. Now I have two cables securing the lid, in case one breaks. Sorry no pix. But I will try to take some today and post in a separate thread.
when you go to drill the rivits out, take a small pocket screwdriver and wedge under the small alluminum plate on the inside, slight pressure keeps the rivits from spinning.....steve
I found that using a dremel is a lot easier than drilling the rivets. I used a metal cutting bit instead of the cut-off wheels. Home Depot or Lowes should have what you need.
I am hoping somebody post a picture of these hinges in here. I have not heard of premium ones and I want to see what I am missing.
They mimick the look of the latches. Almost looks like them. Sorry no pic. Go to www.cyclepartsforless.com and search "Premium Tour Pak Hinges" you'll be able to see them AND order because they're so mch better
