Default tools for 2004 RKC brake removal???

Ok, I have the brake pads, break cleaner, brake fluid ( if I need it) I have the manual. What kind of rachets or wrench will work on these 2004 road king classic caliper bolts? I tried metric #10 but it doen not fit and the 11 is too big. I do not want to strip the bolts. I have not seen these before. any help in the types of wrenchs/ rachets would be helpful so I can do this myself. I learned a long time ago there is always the right tool for the job, and I am pretty sure I do not have them.

You need a 12 point socket to remove the caliper from the leg. On my 09 Street Glide it's a 10mm.

Yep, 12 point 10mm. Its the same on your 04.

If you plan on changing the brake pads on the front or rear of your 04, make sure you have a 12 point 1/4" socket (not to common) available also.

The alternative is a box wrench (much more common), most box wrenches are 12 point and will also work for both bolts...

TimB, I'm not certain how your caliper is mounted compared to mine, but on the multi-spline bolts, my large ones are 10mm.12pt. and the small ones which hold the pads in are 1/4'. Both are 12pt. only. Hope this is will help. It helped me....buy some more tools! Lol

thanks, looking on line to buy a set of box wrenchs and racherts that are 12 point. Are there any other specialty items as far as tools for normal routine maintenence? All the help appreicated.

I can't think of anything special, as I've only done mine once and had the wheel off, which made it much easier. I dare say, check the post by ebert a couple down from this and remember not to remove the large bolts which hold the caliper together. Not without a rebuild kit and new O's for the caliper halves.
Good luck and enjoy working on your bike. I (almost) always enjoy working on mine.

Tim, remember to take off the cover on the master cylinder before pushing your pistons back in to install the new pads. They will self adjust after your install.

thanks for the tip, I have not started the job as I am short the tools, I spoke with a friend I ride with here that owns a truk repair (big trucks) asked him if he had them, he will call me later and let me know. But As soon as I get them done I will let you all know how it went. I have taken notes and have manual so I shoul be good to go as soon as I have the right tools.

I have all the correct wrenches but I had a Kobalt multi socket thing. I was doing brakes on the bike and decided to see if it fit and it did. It was the first time I used it and now its in my tool bag. Its kinda handy around the bike. It has metric and standard.

Bueno!!! Bought the right tools for the right job, Auto zone had what I needed as far as tools. Bought the right wrenches and bought some torx head rachets as well. Got home, reviewed the manual, did one front brake at a time, cleaned the hell out of both of them put in new pads, did not really need them the others were still in very good shape, Maybe I should keep them, I think I will just for gigles. I buttoned everything up, no mushy front brake lever, no whisping sound and stops better cause the front brake lever is not almost hitting the throttle. Next up, clutch adjustment and primary fluid change. I have done the oil and filter 800 ago so I will wait till I hit 1500 or 1700 more miles on the current fluids. I should get there this saturday and sunday no worries. THanks for the tips, advice and direction. Any special advice on a clutch adjustment would not hurt if you all have the time. Thanks and shinny side up!!!
