Default Ignition lock problem

I just changed my bars over the weekend and had an issue getting the ignition lined up again. I finally got everything back together and working but my ignition lock doesn't "lock" when you push down to keep it from turning. It goes down and clicks like its locked but if you grab it and shimmy it a little it will pop up. It feels like its not fully engaging. What's wrong with this thing?

I can't answer you questions, but if you do a search there is a video of how to take the switch out and then replace it....watching it may give you some insight as what you did wrong, if you did do something wrong.

sorry guy...

It's all back in and everything is working right except for when I push down on the lock to keep it from turning. It's a bit hard to explain I hope someone has an answer for me

This is difficult to type and make sense but a similiar thing happened to me. Mine didn't work correctly because I accidentally turned the insides one click too far before reassembly. make yourself a tool or use the ignition partially inserted and play with it one click one way or the other and you'll get it. there is a video on here somewhere or on youtube that explains it well as someone else said.

The link didn't work. It's not the handlebar lock that isn't working. It's the actual lock. Here you turn the actual key to lock and push down. It will push down and lock but if you grab it and shake it will pop back up.

Have you tried using your key to lock it and unlock it again. And make sure that, that little release button underneath it is pushed in when you do it.

Here is the best video I have ever seen regarding ignition switch removal on a late model touring bike. This guy has his in one pile.

assuming you DO have the insides lined up correctly remember that you need to turn the barrel key "ALL THE WAY" past normal left while you put this assembly/shaft back in. Putting it in and punching it down with your fist (not saying you did that but I did) will not seat it properly and cause binding as you described.

I had kind of the same issue. If you look in the hole where the spring sets in you will notice a little "dog" that pops in when you push the detent button and out when you turn the key after pushing the detent button. Mine was sticking in the retracted position even when I worked the key, that "dog" has to be retracted when you put the lock rod into the ignition housing and then has to release and line up with the groove around the neck of the housing when its all in place. If you look on the right hand side of the housing neck when the ignition is in the locked position that dog has to go down into another groove and lock in when the key housing is down and locked. I had to lube the mechanism to free it up. Hope all that makes sense to ya.
