Default 2002 FLTR

Hello, I just joined your website and I already have a question. I have chromed out about 20 sets of lower legs myself on Softails, Dynas and Baggers. I just did my 2002 FLTRI and hit a snag. As of 2002, one side has a shock absorber with a small spring instead of just a larger spring. Weird, huh? Anyway, I checked the Clymers manual and it said to pour in the 11.1 ounces as you cannot fill thru the hollow bolt. I failed to turn the page and see that I was supposed to move the shock up and down slowly to remove all the air bubbles. Now, I am spitting a little h-oil. Not much, just messy. My question is: will the bubbles eventually disperse? If so, how long? I am not losing much oil. If I don't have to tear it down again, i would prefer it. However, I hate to blow oil for the next 1000 miles too!! Anyone know about something like this? Appreciate it. Thanks Gary

Default RE: 2002 FLTR

I have the older air suspension forks on mine but based on your discription your fork is a cartridge style. This being so the oil is actually drawn thru the cartridge to control dampening. The reason to pump the cartridge while filling is to remove air from the cartridge and basically prime it. Based on thousands of cartridge fork rebuilds I can honestly say I have no idea how long or if the cartridge will ever draw the oil in on its own eventually and stop spitting? Sorry, but I can't say I have ever run across anyone who didn't pump the cartridge up. My assumption is that it will NEVER draw enough oil in on its own because it requires the full range of the cartridge stroke to prime it & that cant happen thru normal riding..... T
