I would like to know the symptoms when the compensator is going bad. I did a search on the topic, but there were so many different threads, I feel asleep reading though them.
I'm getting what I would call a kick back when shutting off the bike. And an extra pop when starting the bike, when the bike is already hot. Does that sound like compensator?
I bought it at a repo sale, still under warranty, so it will have to be HD product
Then you will have to pay the difference to have the Screaming Eagle comp installed. Most dealers will allow you to do this while the bike is under warranty. However, there are the odd few dealers who will only install the stock part under warranty with no exceptions.

08 Ultra with 50,000 miles.
Sounds like the Comp to me, what mine looked like after 57k miles on my 09 Road King
I think... your 08 has the same OEM Comp as my 07 came with. These are known to be troublesome, have weak Comp springs & the Comp bolt is know to get loose & start backing out. It can give a loud bang at start up. At 50k miles I say you got more from your Comp than many did. At the very least, pull the cover & torque check or remove, apply red loctie & re-torque the Comp bolt. If you can get a newer SE version, Id definately do that.
Normally do my own wrenching, but this one happens to still be under warranty. I'll let the "professionals" do this and ride my Sporty while they have the Ultra
Have them change it out. I had the dealer replace mine last fall. Soft 02 is right they discontinued the standard comp and the SE is now the replacement at no extra charge if it is under warranty. Mine did the big bang when i started her up. Runs great now. Big time difference.
