My rear turn signals are red running lights so I have the BAL taillight set to low, brake light to high with the 20-blink strobe then solid.

i keep mine on the brightest taillight, and the brightest constant flashing brake light. if it annoys the 23 year olds who are busy in their ford focus from tailgating me, then the bal did its job. there's been no issue with cops bothering me at all.

Same here, at brightest setting. Illegal in MI and many states (2 flash max here), but never had an issue and gets me noticed. I'll even take my hand off brake at a stop light and re-apply as a car approaches from behind, to get their attention.

Double what he said.

I do lay off the brakes once the car behind me is stopped because the BAL is blinding. No sense in pissing people off.

I control mine with a custom dynamics run brake turn controller that has better patterns than the a BAL alone.
