My parts list includes SE Ventilator AC, Jackpot head pipe, Rinehart 3.5 slip ons (because they are already on the bike) and ViED's.
I still can't find a solid answer on if I need to do a HD stage 1 download with the ViED's or if I can get away with just the ViED's.

Thanks again for the input!
I'm in the same budget as you, I have a 2012 FLHTC 103 that I installed V&H Slip ons last year and this year want to do the SE AC and the Headers. Would like to know how yours goes and what you decide as far as the fuel management.

VIED's will work fine on their own, no need for stage 1 dealer download..... it is worthless. I had one on my bike from the previouse owner, bike ran like ****, bought XIED's used and they made the bike run great. I ended up going with a power vision because I have some further plans for cams possibly this summer. If stage one was all I was going to do I would probably have just stayed with the XIED's, like I said the bike ran fine.

I just had a '12 Heritage on the Dyno last week. With the stock A/C and Samson 28.5" fishtails, the sniffer showed it ranging between 14.5:1 and 15.5:1 in closed loop (Cruising). 14.7:1 is factory stock and is already really lean.

The new ECM's do adjust, but not enough, 15.5:1 is too lean.

A download for $150 will only bring it back to 14.7:1, which is ok, but not best for smooth acceleration or oil temps. Better to spend $100 on an FL-XiED-10 and get it down around 14.0:1.

See more details HERE.

ViED's are on the way. I will post my thoughts when i get them installed. As long as i don't cause engine damage and the bike runs cooler i will be a happy camper.

Peace!

TO: DK Custom....thanks for the link on the FL-XiED. I'm thinking thats what I need.

Running a 2013 Road King, just de-catted the pipe over the weekend, Arlen Ness Big Sucker and Rush slip-ons w/2" baffles. Bike really "opened up" after these mods - both in sound and performance. I am concerned about running lean based on all the comments here.
Now let me throw you for a loop - the local Harley hotrod shop (not HD dealer but aftermarket place)contends no Stage 1 download is ever need because the bikes run RICH from the factory.
I've had bikes with and without the DL and really can't tell a difference....

Harley's run lean from the factory... EPA would have chit fits otherwise and catalytic converters work best at higher temperatures (i.e. lean). If the bike runs fine without a remap, a remap is probably not needed. The likelyhood that you could open up your intake and exhaust without changing the flow beyond the ECM's ability to adjust properly on its own is slim. XiEDs will probably work just fine for you, but I really don't recommend doing all those mods without also addressing fuel management.

I too say you're fine with xied's or vied's. I've run xied's on my '09 for two years with stage 1 air filter and V&H twin slash slip ons. The bike runs great and still gets 41 mpg if I'm not twisting on it too hard. Knowing what I know now I would run the same setup again.
