Replace shifter rod?

If the shaft coming out of the trans is stripped then you're out of luck.... but the primary can stay on.
On my big trip this year my shifter arm stripped and fell off about 200 miles outside Reno on Nv 50 " the loneliest road in America"... I held the bike over at 45* and my wife slid under the bike to wedge the arm back on. We ended up having to do that twice but made it to Salt Lake where a dealer replaced the arm for me - also without removing the primary.
