Yes, the rear shocks are different. The FLHX has the HD profile low shocks which are particularly bad imho.

Cool

Nobody ever accused a FLHX of having a great ride. Handling.... maybe. But ride, not so much.

There are a few aftermarket shocks that get good review.
Progressive and ohlins to name a couple.

SG,RGC and RKC come with 12" air shocks from the factory all other except the CVO models have a 13" shock. The 12" only have about 2" of travel and are oversprung for most riders with poor dampening. The models with 13" shocks, Ultras, Classics etc tend to be a little better ride just due to the extra 1" of travel although they still suffer from bad dampening and spring rates.

Almost any of the aftermarket shocks out there are an improvement, top of the line shocks are Ohlins, JRI, followed by Works, Terry Cable, Progressive, HD hand adjustable (CVO shock) and more. If you want your bike to have a great deal of improvement in ride quality and handling any of these will help.

Yep the CVO have the following shocks

Premium Ride Hand-Adjustable Rear Shocks

Experience the ultimate in ride quality with these Premium Touring Shocks. These shocks utilize a single tube, nitrogen charged emulsion design. The design offers enhanced compression and rebound damping compared to the Original Equipment-style air adjustable shocks. This provides a controlled yet plush ride with less bottoming. The compression and rebound damping is split between the two shocks - compression on the right and rebound on the left. This design balances the load of each shock; stiff spring with rebound damping on the left and soft spring with compression damping on the right. Larger chambers (40mm diameter pistons & 14mm rods) allow these shocks to react more quickly to impacts. This keeps the tires tracking while minimizing harshness transmitted through the frame. A simple **** behind the left saddlebag allows the rider to conveniently modify the spring preload via a hydraulic adjuster. Available in Standard Ride Height and Low Ride Height versions.

This product is available in multiple variations. Be sure to look for the one that fits the specific model and year of your motorcycle.

54000008

IN-STORE PURCHASE ONLY Contact dealer for pricing and availability.

Standard-Height

Fits '09-later Touring models (except Trike and models equipped with Front Lowering Kits).

MSRP US $499.95
Yep, the newer CVO Ultra have the 13" Harley Hand Adjustable Shocks on them. They have about 1.25 " more travel than yours and are a bett made shock that is not air preload. Those can be fond on E Bay for about $ 450. They are also available in 12"
