Default Tune Up Problems

Tuning Problem
I have an 06 Ultra stage one. SE air, slip-ons, and SERT. When the sert was installed 4000 miles ago, my mileage dropped to 28/32. I have returned to the dealer twice and they say it is tuned lean and the “sniffer” test was perfect. You can smell a very rich exhaust and brown deposits around the tips of the exhaust, and fuel deposits on the spark plugs. Dealer said sometimes you just get one that runs rich and not much you can do about it. I am wondering if perhaps the tech doing the tune is not really up to date on all the parameters available with the sert. If anyone might have any ideas I would really appreciate info.
Thanks in advance.
Just an added note: This dealer and all employees have always treated me like a king. They call me by name (even the owner) and have always been helpful. I just wonder if this might be over their techs ability.

It might be your tunner. Try somebody else, and if they find it overly rich go get your money back.

They are nice to you so you will return to spend more $$$$!

My '06 Road Glide has the same set up as yours.A combination of city/hwy riding results 38/42 mpg.
I would take it to some other shop that has a techwith SERT tuning exp.

Ask your Dealer to make up his mind.[&:]

Viejo,
I have the same exact set up on my SG. I have had the bike on a dyno 2 times. I have the same results as you. 31 MPG. Rich smelling exhaust at times. No rhyme or reason. Also, mild surging at parking lot speeds and a larger surge at 1600 RPM's when decelerating. The motor does not smooth out till around 2800 rpm's.
I have considered switching to a PCIII but after talking to Jamie at Fuelmoto he suggested that I stick with the SERT and get another tune. I am going to wait till spring when the weather gets warmer since the ambient temperature supposedly affects the Air/fuel mixture. The last time my bike was on a dyno was February of 2006. It was cold outside, I don't know if that messed up the tune. BTW, I also have the 25 degree injectors installed.

That bad boy is fat as a pig no way it should use that much gas. When I had just the SE Stage 1 air filter and SE mufflers on my 06 Ultra with SERT and 25 deg injectors I would get no less than40 mpg around town. Hell I have the 95" build now that still gets the same MPG as before the build was done. I'd take it to someone else that knows what they're doing.

There is no way your bike should have such lousy gas mileage on a good SERT tune. Ask the dealerfor a copy of your map. The a/f may be good for the WOT dyno runs, but it is waytoo rich for cruising. I'd look for another dealer/service department 'cause they are not being honest with you or they don't know their butt from a hole in the ground in doing a SERT tune, or both.

Did they give you a copy of the MAP? If so, not much to lose, I'd load the Stage 1 MAP and see what happens to the mileage? You can always go back to the MAP they created. Also, you don't have a sticking brake or some other rolling problem? - saw another guy with had poor mileage and it was a sticking brake.
