2012 Street Glide. Won't start in gear with clutch pulled in? Can't remember kickstand position, up I think.
Am I doing something wrong or is this a safety design thing?
Try adjusting the clutch cable and clutch pack is all I can figure. I've had the problem before, may be different circumstances, but definitely start there.
You should be able to start the bike in gear with the clutch disengaged... But that's not to say you should. It's nice to able to start it in gear in an emergency situation so you should fix the problem, although under normal conditions you should start the bike with the trans in nuetral. Doing so is much easier on the starter as clutch disc drag induces a significant additional load on the starter when the transmission is in gear.
I'm not sure how the circuitry works for the clutch lever to allow starting in gear but I believe it has something to do with the TSM/TSSM/HFSM. As for the nuetral safety switch, I would assume it's ok since the bike will start in nuetral.
Have you changed levers from stock? There is a tab on the clutch lever that presses a switch in the clutch perch when you pull the lever. If your lever doesn't have the tab (like pre-07 models) it won't start in gear.
If levers are stock, might be a bad switch or pinched/broken wire.
I've owned the bike since Apr 2012, just yesterday noticed it wouldn't start that way. Not a habit of mine. Stock levers, and such.
Canada? Doubtful but wouldn't rule it out.
