We have quite a few of them here in Iowa. They even made a movie about them , but it's a chick flick and I have never watched it! (LOL)

Nice shots!
I've never had a bad road trip when covered bridges were involved. Beautiful country and you can usually find a great place to throw some groceries down your throat.

Never understood why a covered bridge? If it's raining like hell I would think the last place you would want to be is over a swollen river!

Two reasons for a covered bridge, you need the upper structure as part for support of the structure, triangulation, all that stuff.
Since they already have that then they put a roof over it to keep the bridge dry so that it does not rot as fast.
second, it is to keep the horses from seeing the water, it looks like they are just going into the barn.
