3rd gear with bad sounds !
I ride a '08 Road King police FLHP with 31,000 Miles. I Recently had run straight pipes for a while. Not sure what excactly is going on here with my bike. I have noticed a little issue in 3rd gear when I give the bike a quick snap of the throttle I can hear a sound(that seems to come from the lower end of the bike). Its something of a metal on metal sound like to metal plates slamming each other sort of. I now am using stock exhaust slip-ons and the I still hear this sound. Before when I was using straight pipes, I had felt vibrations and "sounds" in concert with the vibrations whenever I let off of the throttle. Now that I'm back to stock exhaust this issue has went away, but am left with this "3rd gear" noise and feel. Maybe its coinsidence this 3rd gear problem is coming about the same time I was using straight pipes and maybe its not. I'm looking for a insight from someone who has prior experience with this or knows about mechanics. If its of any constilation I do ride alot and in bad weather, snow, heavy rain, etc. Other than the 3rd gear issue, the bike accelerates and runs great and decelerates pretty good. I don't do burnouts, altough I have tried some wheelies before ( with little success), and I usually shift quickly although I'm starting to slow my shifts a little bit and make them more smooth.
