Default no end play

I took my front wheel to and indy shop today and had them install wheel bearings. My bike is a 99 road king and installed drag specialties/allballs bearings 25-1002 this was replacing the original bearings which have about 50k on them. When I got the wheel home and installed it (still on the lift) I noticed that it wasn't turning very smooth. I put an indicator on it and it shows no end play. i had the stepped shim, a .008 shim, and a .032 shim that was in with the original bearings and installed with the new bearings (yes they are already greased) I removed the .008 shim, still no end play. I then removed the .032 shim, still no end play. i have a clymers manual and it says to get more end play remove or use smaller shims. I have been searching on google and some directions on there say to get more end play add more shims...am I doing this backwards, should I be adding shims?? this is my first shot at bearings, but I would think that once this was set originaly that the thickness of the shims would stay the same. maybe a difference because I'm not using the oem bearings?? Could one of the races maybe not all the way seated at the bottom?? I hate taking anything to a shop but i'm kinda stumped here. It's probably somthing stuid that I am doing but I don't know what...I have checked end paly both mounted and off the bike..off the bike (not sure about on) with the axel nut finger tight the end play was gone.

Yes add shims. Different bearings will require a different amount of shims. If you drive it to tight you will destroy the bearings. I think the manual says .004 end play but might be wrong. To much end play is way better than a tight bearing.

my says .002-.006 end play. but that is also a clymers manual. mine is now rinning .004-.005. figure since the bearing were greased and such that when I checked it that maybe I better check it again now that I have road the bike a few miles (about 25-30) and see if it still checks the same. still have my squeak when turning left. streting bearings are next, maybe that'll fix it..either way the bearings needed done.
