Question Stage One - Screaming Eagle vs. After Market

I am fairly new to the Forum, but have read most of what is out there regarding stage one upgrades. As many opinions as ..........

On the basic end, I could do a Screaming Eagle A/C and slip-on's, combined with the HD download, a fairly basic Stage One, for about $1,100. However, I have also read about the Fuel Moto full package deals (at about $1,500-1,600), and have also priced out an aftermarket system with Power Vision tuner, 2-1-2 Cobra head pipes (to eliminate the catalytic converter and the associated heat) along with an after market A/C and slip-on's by V&H. The cost for this one would be about $1,900.

Any input/recommendations would be appreciated. Are these prices in line with what you have spent? And specifically, might this aftermarket system be TOO loud for touring, and/or maintaining relations with he neighbors?

Thanks in advance for the input.

Recommendation one, dont waste your money on the HD download. Get a real tuner. Powercommander, fuelpak, SERT, Fi2000.... there are tons out there. Talk to some parts guys and search around the forum.

As far as parts go, just as many options there. I am a big fan of Arlen Ness Big Sucker stage 1 air cleaner. Good value, good performance.

Pipes are going to be expensive. Slip ons will effect sound, head pipe is where more of your power is. So remember that.

Call Jamie (owner) at Fuel Moto and ask him about a package deal on the Fuel Moto air cleaner, Power Vision and the mufflers of your choice.

He will steer you in the right direction.

Their customer service is second to none!

+1 on fuel moto & +1 on getting a tuner and not just a download. There are literally a million opinions on what pipes, AC, and tuners. Research and find what fits your needs.

Any air cleaner kit will provide more air than your motor needs so that is about quality/looks. Slipons are mostly sound and looks too. Stage 1 performance comes with a header and proper tune/tuner. Id say pick an A/C ya like (SE/Ness/Fuelmoto/S&S). Get a good header (Fuelmoto/Fullsac/Drago). Listen to a lot of slipons and pick some ya like. Then get a proper tuner (SERT/TTS/PV) and proper dyno tune. Best Stage 1, period!

Im another one to say call Jamie at Fuel Moto and tell him what your looking for dont waste your $ on the HD download, it is a EPA compliant tune that mainly retards the timing, its better than nothing but is very limited.

They can save you $ in a package.

full exhaust appox 800.00 (you can save a bunch if you just cut the cat out of your stock pipe and use slipons maybe down to $ 450.00 -500.00) check out American Custom exhaust for their exchange program.
A/C appox 150.00
Tuner anywhere from 200 -500

So your costs could be as low as 1200.00 to 1500.00 and labor is easy for a stage 1 you should be able to do it in a couple hours.

Good Luck with your set up Ed. The overall cost and confusion of what's needed and what pipes sound like what over the others out there, has pretty much made me leave mine stock. Yeah it doesn't have the cool sound or nice looking pipes but I don't have a headache thinking about what's what.

I've done two kits from Fuelmoto, the second time I ordered the kit with the Power Vision Unit. I like the PV better than the PC there is no piggy backing, though I never had a problem with the PC unit. Both kits if I remember correctly (AC, Slipons, PV/PC) were less than a $1000.

well, i went a little cheaper -

$100 VIED Fuel enrichment
$0 Removed Cat from Stock Head Pipe
$128 Ebay Chrome Big Sucker
+ Slip Ons - $400

It may not be the best or cheapest setup - but it is ALL the engine mods I plan on doing and it works for me. I was just looking to lose some heat, and get a little more sound.

It has made a tremendous difference. 2013 Street Glide. I may eventually ditch the VIEDS and purchase a PCV or like, but it may take 5-6 months ad i am not sure how "more" i will get from doing that verses the setup I have now.

Thats my .02c.
