I have a 2001 FLHTC, I bought the bike about two years ago. I just has a big bore installed, got the bike back and runs good. Went to start it and as soon as I turned the ignition on the started did also. Found it was a faulty start switch on the handle bar. I just replaced it. Now, for some reason, the damn alarm system, (that I never new I had) is active and won't let me start the bike. When I turn the ignition on, I see a red key light come on for about 5 seconds and then it goes out. The bike did not come with a key fob. So, what can I do?
I doubt it's the alarm , do you have a service manuel ??? If not pm me your email and I will email you the started troble shooting section on a 01 FLHTC
You've had the bike for two years, never had a issue starting it. You have starter switch go bad, repair that switch and now it wont fire ( cranks but wont start ) the starter switch is next to the kill switch,
I'd be looking at that area again.
Thanks guys, I have the owners manual and the service manual. He's the thing. When I turned on the ignitions switch the starter kick in too. When I pulled the green wire off the starter it wouldn't do it. That lead me to the start switch. When I found the two wires to the start button on the handle bars, I cut one of the wires. Black with red line. Next I turned on ignition and the starter did not come on like before. I did some reaserch on the form and found similar problems. Oh, when I touched the wires together I cut with the ignition on the starter would start up and the bike would start. This morning, I went to HD, got new switch for handle bar, then before I installed the new switch I tried again to touch the wires together I cut and nothing happen like it did before. Son, I installed the new starter button, and nothing. I even replaced the silinoid and nothing. I tried to set the alarm as per manual, but no flashing turn signals, nothing. Now if I jump a wire from positive side of battery to the stater the starter will crank, but motor will not start. This leads me to believe I have a faulty theft control system. I spoke to Harley about it and a replacement is $299!
The red light is your check engine light & is supposed to come on when you turn the key on and go off after a set time. Check your fuses & see if you have power to the coil. You can also pull codes by turning the ignition switch on & off for a predetermined time something like on 3 seconds off 10 seconds , repeat . I can't remember how many times. It is in the repair manual. I will try to get out & check it when I get a chance if someone doesn't beat me to it.
Thanks, it's not an engine light, it's the red key light. I got it retest but still nothing. All fuzes checked and cleaned and electrical grease applied. Installed new relay and main breaker. I suppose I'll have Harley pick it up Tuesday so they can use they can fix
