HELP: Fuel gauge bouncing around, getting code B1004
While riding my 2010 FLHXSE yesterday, I noticed my fuel gauge started bouncing around -- going to full (even though I knew I had a half-tank left), then back to half, then back to full. Meanwhile, DTE reading starts going up, from 150 to 180 miles, even though I know I've got about 80-100 miles left. Looked at diag codes when got home and found B1004 under SPeedometer module. Part number 67516-09 listed behind code. That's speedometer, not fuel gauge. Anybody got a clue what's happening to my bike?
Local Chunky River HD dealer checked my fuel level sensor low (B1004) code and then checked the wiring harness from the fuel sensor to a connection under the seat near the fuse panel. It was an open circuit. The wire had stretched and broken apart. It carries 7V to the sensor. Service tech knew exactly which wire to check because he's seen it before. He said a brand new bike came in from Harley with the exact same broken wire, and it hadn't even been sold yet. He ordered a new fuel sensor wiring harness for me ($20), and didn’t charge for the diagnosis even. I asked him to mail the harness to me and I’ll put it on under the console on top of the tank. Good outcome.

Turns out Chunky River HD did NOT fix my gas gauge problem after all. Still going to full when I know it's half full, low fuel light coming on way and staying on, DTE showing way more miles left than I have gas. I noticed the HD Electronic Service Manual, which I have, identified five separate diagnostic tests to be run in the exact order given for al B1004 diagnostic code. Unfortunately Chunky River HD never ran any of them, just keep replacing parts (fuel level senor wiring harnest, fuel level sensor itself, float in tank). After $280 worth of guessing, problem not fixed. I took it to a local independent cycle shop here and they DID run the five tests as HD suggests, and found the float in the tank was intermittently stopping (6 out of 8 tests showed no signal from float). They replaced the float, which is part of the fuel level sensor or attached to it (they bought both together). That fixed the gas gauge, low fuel light and DTE problems all at once.
It pays to run the tests that HD suggests to find a problem, and stop guessing at it and replacing parts.

Read a story the other day about a guy having the tank sensor going bad in his vehicle, can't remember if it was a car or scooter (about the same mechanism anyway) and he put a dose of Techron in his tank and the gauge straightened out. His theory, sludge or varnish on the windings was disolved by the Techron. Something relatively cheap to try if you remember.

Good idea. But probably would not apply to me. I always treat my gas with liquid horsepower every tank.
I came upon this thread while looking for answers to the exact same problem.. Fuel gauge drops to E after about 1/4 tank.. Sometimes it bounce back up. Diag codes b1004 & b1005.
Thought I would provide the solution for my bike:
On my 2007 street glide the problem was the clip holding the float wire backed off a small amount.. This allowed the float to be out of alignment at 3/4 of a tank.. After pressing in the clip and crimping a bit for a better hold. Problem solved.
