Default Pinging testing

Do dealerships have ways to test for pinging beyond simply taking the bike for a ride and listing for it?

Can they test for various elevation conditions?

Not that I'm aware of, they just run it around the block then promptly tell you everything is 'Normal'. Why are you getting pinging.....let me guess, it starts around the 60-65 MPH/ 5-6th gear/ 2500-3200 RPM range? Oh and you've got 5-6K on the clock or it started around that mileage?

That's about the mileage it started. I have about 8500 now.

You can get a powervision and monitor it in real time or log you rides and go back and look at it.

Uhh huhh that's about right....I went thru a lot trying to figure out how to stop my ping and the only way I found was to retard the timing along the parameters I outlined in my previous post. The only way to do that is to be able to get into the 'Map' and the only way (cheapest way anyway) I found was with a Power Commander 5. I started with -1 degrees in the trouble spots and went -2 in the stubborn ranges. I haven't heard a ping in quit awhile. I'm sorry to say, its the only real way to rid your bike of the dreaded 'Ping'.

I do not think the dealer has any special test.....if they did my bike would definitely have to study first.

Pinging bikes...... need a tune.

And, if you just wish to TEST and look for ping and NOT fix it right away, borrow someones TTS, hook it up with a laptop, go ride and collect generic data.

You can also do this with a SEPST, but the data is not as good.

To COLLECT data and NOT alter a tune, TTS, SEPST do NOT need to be married to a bike.

A dealer COULD do this with an 'in house' SEPST, but I strongly doubt any dealer would actually do so.

I use a 'married' blue TTS to tune with all of the time, all kinds of bikes.. Then take that data and use whatever tuner that the owner has to paste into the map for a NICE starting point.

On a 2011 bike? Get a flash tuner and CHANGE that timing where you find the ping. Do NOT do a power commander as that will only adjust the main timing tables and not closed spark, idle, etc. Best bet to be able to change this, after you find out whats up... buy a PV, suck your present tune out, alter the timing and shoot it right back in.

I understand trying to find the cure. But I do not understand why it starts to happen in that range, more so milage.

yes mine has started to develop the same exact thing you describe...why now? what has changed?

My 2012 pinged at that rpm range and I called the MOCO myself. They said take it to your dealer and have them send us the ecu. MOCO said they retarded the timing 4 degrees at between 2500 and 3500 rpm and added more fuel there also. Cured mine.
