Default YAHT (Yet Another Heat Thread)

So, this is my 3rd H-D bike. Went from a '98 Fat Boy, to a '12 Heritage, and now to this '13 FLTRU.

I get it, Harleys run hot. No big deal.

I just want to make sure this one's not running "out of the ordinary" hot.

The only mods done to it were done by the dealer before purchase (and are listed in my sig). I don't know what mapping they installed with the Tuner; but I'll ask.

The bike does have quite a bit more "perceived" heat than my 2 previous bikes. I'm wondering if its because of the way this model directs airflow, or if the dealer installed a higher performance mapping that just generates more heat.

Basically, I just want to be sure nothing's wrong with this new $25,000+ machine.

My SE Street Glide is very very hot. I need to get the cat drilled out, and will probably go with true duals. Might also get some heat deflectors for the thigh area but that's not the main area of heat - my right calf is getting most of the pain and suffering.

I had a 10 Heritage, a 12 Road King, and now I have a 13 FLTRU with a stage 1 (powervision, dyno'd).

Its hot, but my oil temp gauge isnt reading anything out of the ordinary. I did some back roads and finished on suburban roads yesterday, it was 85 degrees out, temp gauge said 251, so no big deal.

It does feel a bit hot, but dont forget, you've got lowers.

I removed the mid-frame heat deflectors because I think they trap heat.

I'm also considering dremeling off the handle part of the lower faring vent. It will allow for a bit more air flow but I'll still be able to grab the door to close/open them.

Perceived heat? Sounds like you have not rode it yet or it is not hotter than your Heritage in your opinion. I would cool that beast down. I have a gutted pipe from fleabay waiting on me when I get done sucking sand. 100 or so bucks shipped to your door from fleabay. If you go that route, make sure its removed with the window method not just cut in half and hollowed out. This removes length and will cause issues when installing. Good luck and post some pics of that bad boy!!

I would not say "Harley's run hot", I would say TC 96's and larger run hot. My buddy's '93 Evo does not run hot at all, neither did my TC 88 Wide Glide. My '07 UC runs hot enough to bake cookies, even with fuel management. The larger the engine, the more heat it produces. Probably some more factors in there since the only difference between an TC 88 and 96 are 8 cubic inches.

It is normal for the newer Twin Cams to run hot. But normal does not mean it is right.

There are a lot of things you can do to reduce heat.

Remove Cat
Do a good Stage 1
WardsPartWerks fans
Finned billet reusable oil filter

There is more, but the above is a good start, and probably all you will need to get the temps down to a comfortable level, for you, AND for engine longevity.

"or if the dealer installed a higher performance mapping that just generates more heat."

If you want to get rid of some heat, get rid of the cat so it can get out, and get it tuned or tune it yourself with a PV or TTS. Or, if you don't want to mess with the tuner, throw a bit of fuel at it with the various plug ins.

A little fuel will make a difference.
