Default Busted case

I have a friend with a busted engine case on a 2006 Screaming Eagle Fat Boy. It broke when trying to install the crank case plug... Harley wants over $3200 to get new cases and install. And the dealer is not budging any on the price.. Money is tight, any ideas? Does not appear to be able to be welded... The bike is still at his house. Going to call a few other dealers..

Anyone know a great Indy in the South Georgia or North Florida area?

Ride safe,
Mike

Labor is the killer as everything has to come apart and go back together. Check out some indys for used/aftermarket case and cheaper labor. Might be cheaper to find a complete motor? Great excuse for some cubes!

What exactly do you mean by it broke? The only thing I can think of is the hole stripped when installing, therefore the hole is too big for a plug. you very well may be able to go oversized plug, you will need to find a good machinist or a mechanic. Go to an indy. Stay away from the dealer.

The side of the case broke when installing the plug. 2 pieces about 1.5 inches long broke off.

It won't help solve the problem, but a photo would be of great interest. Difficult to imagine how a crank case can break in that way!

Is that a tapered plug? Might explain things.

If he still has the pieces, maybe JB weld?

Touching that plug is a NO-NO! Why did he remove it?

Not sure I'd trust JB Weld...

Read something that said to get all oil out of the Softail that plug needed to be removed. There was also an Indy that kept a jar on his counter with the amount of oil that the plug kept from being drained. I am suprised that it would bust so easy..... The metal is very light and evidently weak...

Ride safe,
Mike

Yep, my dealer mentioned this plug when I went in for oil this weekend. The parts guy said I needed XXX quarts and I told him that it never takes what the manual says. His explanation was that there's always about 1/2 qt left in the bottom of the motor and the only way to get it all out is to remove (break) that plug. But NEVER remove that plug because it's expensive as hell to get it back together. It would appear that you learned that the hard way...
