I found that the dirty oil is cleaner in the chrome filters. Plus I can get 'em at Walmart, way cooler than a HD dealer.

A bunch of us started using the new stainless steel micronic re-usable filters with good results. A well know engine builder up here we know tried one, but wasn't sure...then told us his oil temp went down by 20 degrees since it's got cooling fins built right in. Also has a nut for easy removal. Works like a charm and looks great. I bought it on ebay for 89 bucks. Already paid for itself. Never buy one again...

On one of the earlier discussions on this, one of the folks posted the specs for the paper filters...if I remember correctly, the specs say the smallest particle they filter out is 5 micron, but they have a range of larger particles that go thru also, including "occasional 300 micron particles...the new stainless steel micronic let NO PARTICLE bigger than 30 microns thru...as your paper filter starts to filter out the small particles and the bigger voids are still open, where are the particles going to flow to????? I suspect the bigger voids...letting the increasing size particles thru...check the detailed specs of the paper filter...

Most of these discussions are for people who should be out riding, instead of worrying about which filter to use.
How about a 5 micron chunk, do you really want particles that can be filtered out circulating thru your engine

I wouldn't call something that's 10 to 20 times smaller than a human hair a "chunk" but I understand the point you were making.

Also, what seems to always be missed is absolute vs nominal filtration specs. Guaranteed the HD filter isn't 5 micron absolute filtration and it (along with several other filters) do a more than adequate job of filtering out "chunks". I'd take a 30 micron absolute filter over a 5 micron nominal filter any day of the week if I were that concerned about it.

I saw the Arlen Ness filter set up in their cataloge. It has a fancy housing with a cleanable metal filter set up inside. We used the metal filters in the military on the F-15's and other jets so I know that some metal filters work. Does anyone have any experiance with this Ness set up?
