Re-read the post Mark. I advocated FOR training. My post was a response to the question "what did people do before there was training available".

I ride a Road King and recently my wife and I took a Ride Like A Pro class in Detroit. I never dabbed a foot or hit a cone. I might be able to ride YOUR bike better than you Just to show you I'm a good sport; I'll be at Deal's Gap next weekend, June 15th. Maybe we can hook up and ride a little, it's not that far from Greensboro.

I was taught in late 1969, early 1970, how to ride. I was picked up and sat down on a little mini bike with a Briggs & Stratton engine and told "You don't know how fast you can go until you fall down"

Been riding ever since.

I took my test on one of these in 1973. As I recall, it wasn't much of a test. Now I got 2 of them in my garage in the rebuild stage.

I took my DMV test on a Yamaha Zuma 125 scooter, but that was what I was riding full-time.
state of Wa used to require you take the test on a bike in one of 3 engine capacity ranges and the endorsement restricted you to a bike no larger than the level of your endorsement. Don't know if they still do that but it seemed like a good idea to me.
Now that they only have an endorsement for two wheels or trike/sidecar.

The one and only time I had to take the DMV MC riding test was back in 1980 . the guy walked out side with me asked me to show him my bike . He said "Ride to the end of the block make a left turn hand signal and go around the block ." When I got back he said " You passed, you made it back "

now I just renew on line every 4 years .

I beleave first time riders have to pass a fairly tuff riding course now to pass.

I suppose I should feel bad as I have never had to take a DMV MC test. I was grandfathered in from the early sixties. I think I'm a decent rider - done the Dragon/Skyway a couple of times, ride as often as I can, been on some longish trips. Never had a problem. Only time I ever dropped my bike was moving it around in the garage the day after I bought it.

I still don't understand why people would suggest to take the test on a smaller bike than they ride, like a moped.

I had the exact same test back in 1978. Go across the parking lot, make a left at the street, ride around the block and come back. I passed, but the guy behind me didn't. He took off and went straight across the road, hit the railroad tracks and landed in the fence of Chanute AFB. The guy couldn't believe he failed and was arguing with the inspector.

My son lives in Minnesota and tried the road test on his Nightster and failed. As a matter of fact, everyone on a real motorcycle failed that day. He rented a moped and passed while everyone else failed again.
