Looking for some input on the SE-204 Cams in regards to "Hot Start" issues. I'm considering putting a set in a 2009 96" FLHTCU w/ Ness Big Sucker and Rush Mufflers with 2" baffles. I'll probably go with a Power Vision Tuner from Fuel Moto. I don't want to get into a "They're no good use these" conversation. I'm curious if anyone has had a hot start problem with these? I'd appreciate any input. I guess I'm trying to avoid popping off the heads to put in compression releases ( manual or automatic ) if it isn't necessary. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
Ran mine for a year before MCR put in, yes they will kick back and cough through the AC. But still enjoy them. I went through a starter before the MCR's too.
I have an '07 with a 103" kit and Woods cams, after these mods it had a hot start issue too, too much compression kick back. I had to replace one battery, due to this I believe, and now I hit the starter switch once real quick and let it turn (release compression) then hit the starter again and it has always started fine this way (though probably doing the battery and starter no good). That being said, there are Jim's manual compression release valves that can be installed without having to remove the heads though there is a tool you need to align it properly for drilling. The shop that built my engine said they would do it, I just haven't gotten around to it yet as the "bypass" method is working for now. I believe all 103" engines now come with auto compression release.
I have an 07 with 255 cams installed. I was getting the starter kickback quite often. Changed the battery, no difference. Tried different tunes, no help. Installed the SE compensator, havent had a single starter kickback in 2000 miles.
I ran SE 204 in my 2005 Fatboy with a 95" engine for over 40,000 miles. loved them, great usable power band . They pulled from idle to about 5500 rpm. I never had a starting problem with them.

Same here....I've got 255's in a 96" and was having the kickback along with the loud bang when starting. The SE compensator fixed all that, no problems since.
With the 204's I don't think you will have an issue at all. The intake close on the 204's is later than the stock cams, which means less starting compression than stock.
I have had 204's in my 08 streetglide with the 96 first with the pcv and now the powervision no hot start problems.I have over 12k and very happy with them.
I have a 2010 road glide with a 96" and 204se cams. PCV tuner and true duals. No hot start issue or back fire. Great cam for me as I do strictly touring.
