Default Too Dyno or not?

New to me 99 RKC, looks to have stock exhaust with slip-ons and different air filter, everything else is stock motor wise that I can tell. My Indy that I meet says he would like to have my bike Dyno'd to get a good starting point on my bike. He states that HD's come lean from the factory. BTW, my bike is FI. What do you guys think? Should I spend the $400 for a Dyno?

Depends on what your goals are for your bike.

If you know you're going to want to upgrade your exhaust system and/or put cams in 'er (biggest bang for the HP/Torque buck IMO) then you may as well just get going with that stuff. I'd think your indy would do the dyno no charge as part of the job if you had them install your stuff...the two I use always throw-in Dyno when they do any major surgery (or even just exhaust).

Do you have a race-tuner or a TTS Mastertune (my pref), etc? You certainly need that to get things right. Just going TTS and Dyno would likely be good too if you're not looking to spend on full exhaust and cams, etc.

Have fun!

Ask your tuner what it will cost just to do a base pull. If your bike runs good now, it may not need a tune. This will also let you know what your 400 bucks gained you in the end. If your tuner is a stand up guy, he will tell you that your bike will, or will not feel like it's 400 bucks better when he gets done.

on a 99 what is the FI? is it the old MM or Delphi. I beleive it is MM. If it is MM, i would leave it alone if you are not having heat issues, decel pop or other radical running issues?

99 is mm. I'm actually surprised that there are any tuners that will still tackle one of those...

if its MM, then unless you are experiencing lots of problems, best to leave it alone or be prepared to convert it to carb.

Whatever happened to reading the plugs? lol, if it runs ok and the plugs look good, no need to dyno...
my opinion.

If you are happy with the bike and it runs fine, ride the crap out of it. He is correct, all harleys come lean from the factory. If you just want to get rid of the lean and the bike sound better, do slip ons/air cleaner and a tuner. If you are after more HP/TQ have your indy do a stage 2 (exhaust, tuner, air cleaner and cams) on it and include the before/after dyno in as part of the deal. If you are new to HD, I suggest you ride it for a bit while you figure out what you want to do to it. Go to local bike events, talk to riders, look/listen to their bikes, then you can see/hear what you are getting BEFORE you buy anything. Good luck with your ride man, stay safe.

Great input. The bike to me runs really good and I don't want to waste my money either. It does have the MM Fuel injection but seems to run great. I am mostly concerned the cam shoes everyone talks about. The previous owner said the previous owner to him had the cam tensioners shoes done at 20K service but I have no proof of it. I'm just turned 27K miles yesterday and at the 30K service I have a big decision. Inspect the cam shoes and stay with stock or upgrade to hydraulic Screaming Eagle kit. I don't really want to spend 1,200 for that plus I work lots of overtime to pay for it. So to stay on topic, I think I will hold off on the dyno for now. LR.

i would check the cam shoes when you plan your next major service and if they are ok, put off the upgrade to the SE plate as well. lots of us spend $$$ when there is no need just because we want the next best thing.

At some point you will have to do something, why rush it.
