I don't have a problem with my Nuvi 550 in the sunlight, I can still see the screen. But, then again I still have better than 20/20 vision.

What garmin are you using that doesnt wash out,i've got 2 different garmin models with those aftermarket visors and they don't help much.I like to find 1 that actually can be seen.

I've been using my nuvi 750 for 7 years in the bike. Would like to get a newer one with traffic and bluetooth, but haven't gotten around to it. It gets harder, not washed out, around the noon hour when the sun is right above. I can still see it.

I've been using an old Garman C340 for the last six years and never had a problem with the sun washing out the image. But what I'm looking for now is one that I can download weather radar for less $$$ than the Zumo.

None . In all my travels I have never found it to be needed any where in the US.
Used a different model in the Army but even then it was not really needed most of the time.

I have a Garmin 265W. It depends on the angle you have the unit set at. My buddy has one that he keeps at such a terrible angle that you can never see it - here are a couple of pictures of mine; the last one is what I see at eye level when I'm riding:

Paper maps work the best for me too. They can be seen in bright daylight, need no power source, store easily and always get me to my destination with out recalibrating.

$80 Garmin Nuvi 40LM on right handlebar RAM mount. It does wash out in direct, bright sunlight but is still usable in most conditions. I mounted it on the throttle side in case I need to shade it with my hand to check while stopped. In the event of serious rain, I just put it in the pak and cover the power plug with a rubber bolt/screw protector. If there is a passing shower, I don't worry about it.

Just as FYI, there's another active thread going on. It's mostly about expensive GPS models, but there's a few other ideas too.

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...ggestions.html

I think a GPS is just another gizmo that I'm trying to get away from while riding. However, there are a few times that I won't mind knowing where the next exit is. For those few times, I'll use my cheap GPS or iPhone.
