The states with ape laws are usually 15" above the highest part of the seat. I've been using apes for some forty years, and I've had 30" to 12". I figured anything above the shoulders is showing off. The weight of your arms will make you shoulders hurt after a while. Mine, in my sig are 16" and are perfect for me. I'm 6-9 and they are just above my elbows, and that's a good rule of thumb. Between shoulder and elbow. I've found that HCC and Cyclesmith have the best hand passion for me.

I bought my RK with 16s and for me apes Aren't comfortable and handling suffers with them. I'm pretty happy with sweepers on my EG.ove your Hands around on thy bars as ya ride and find a place that is comfortable.A couple inches up down back or different wrist angle can make a big difference.
Read lots if posts here. I went with comfy and my wo578 fit me good. I wanted to keep my hands behind the fairing. Do what you want and hold your hands up where its comfortable
If it's your left elbow it may be a repetitive motion injury from using the clutch. Commonly known as tennis elbow. If the nerve running between the bones (radial ulnar nerve) hurts when you press on it, changing the bars isn't going to alleviate it.
i think you may have hit it on the head Boondock Saint , the pain is always in my left elbow , but then again i know i have carpul something.
but i do find myself tensing up alot when riding, have to remind myself to relax, but i think i might have my bars rotated back a bit, therefore dropping my elbows. time will tell

I've been dealing with this for a couple of years now (not from using the clutch though) and it helps to ice it before and after a ride as well as using the brace that goes up around your upper forearm.

its not from the clutch, just riding out on the hiway, will cause the pain, it's not bad, usually just drop my arm down and let it hang at my side for a few mins.
