Well, since the last post here I have been through the ringer on not only deciding on a touring vs. heritage, but also if I was able to even keep my job! The employment situation turned out for the best and in the meantime I took all of your advice and was able to test ride the '13 SG, RG, Ultra, the '13 Heritage, as well as demo the '14s when they were released, all with my passenger. I also did a lot of research and reading of the forums. We knew it would be the touring even though there would be fitment issues, buffeting and engine shake - after reading all of the input we decided we'd learn to love it! Plus, when we test rode the SG the first time...my fav band Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" blasted over the radio, and we took it as a sign - something the softail could not provide without unattractive speaker bulbs on the bars. I had no idea what I was missing! Wife also told me she could ride on back from NC to NY without a problem.
Afterwards, I was set to buy a '13 vivid black SG from the dealer with some custom mods like RC wheels, AC and exhaust, but would still have to install bagger apes and they wanted 31K! No way, walked out.
So in searching craigslist I found this vivid black '13 SG with 2K on the ODO modded exactly the way I would really want it - Agitator's, bagger apes, blacked out with PM air cleaner, V&H Dresser dual headers with CFR's to round it out (I had no idea what CFR's even were) and a tour pack to boot. He had a $65K Ford Cobra on the way and had to unload his bike, he was asking $24500 but I got it for $22k. I thought, even if it doesn't work out I would probably be able to recoup what I'm paying for it, or even flip it. So I've modded the footboards with TallBoys Cycles footboard supports and extended brake and shifter levers. The rest is history. I still have the breakout and am trying to sell it, and the wife is saying I can keep it too but I really don't see myself riding it now, not with the bully in the barn.
Now i just need to find buds that like to ride, and not 1/4 mile to bike night. Thanks again for all of the input.

Find a new "other half" that has her own sled.

Why on earth would I want to do that? That would only give her the opportunity to follow me everywhere I go every time I ride. No thanks.

To summarize...traded in an '04 Heritage for the new Breakout because my second half wasn't riding as a passenger as much but also because it was new and had everything I (thought) wanted (103, 6 spd, fat tire). Well now that I have a new bike, she wants to ride more and the Breakout isn't really made for that. I can't afford 2 bike's so I am drawn back to the Heritage but took a RG Custom out for a spin and holy cow! But the unbalanced motor and wind buffeting could be a deal killer. I don't even think the wind is as bad when I ride without a windshield, which has been 99.9% of the time. I also don't want to buy and mod an RG into looking like a goldwing in order to eliminate this effect. I'm going to start searching/reading up in this forum for ideas to help me come to a decision, but any suggestions here would be appreciated.

Had two different Fatboys.......2010 & 2007. I got tired of the wind and no tunes on long trips so I built a fairing for it. Then I decided to put some bags on it for convenience..........bought a new SG this summer instead. Could not be happier. Comfortable ride, handles better, more storage, cruise control.......on and on it goes. I wish I would have switched sooner!

Great looking bike.......you will not be disappointed.

Just remember this about Street Glides and Road Glide Customs - they have shorty stock windshields to look cool and that's all. The wind will beat your head around all day with those stock windshields. Road Glide Ultra and Electra Glides have high windshields for a reason - to keep from beating your head up!! No, the tall windshields ain't cool lookin', but they are functional. So you gotta ask yourself this: Do I want cool or do I want comfort and function???

Sorry to be so blunt, but I've been down this road before. If wifey is riding a lot, my suggestion would be to look hard at a Road Glide Ultra or an Electra Glide Ultra or Limited. If cost is a factor, then check out a Road King. They all have comfort and function - wifey will be happy and if she's happy you'll be happy.

JMHO - Good luck in your search.
