I just looked at mine at 58,000 should of looked at about 30 or 40. Gone is all I can say.
The shoe arms half way gone. So I went with a gear drive new cams pushrods runs great and no more tensioners.
Thank you all for responding! Since I'm currently an Apt dweller, I decided to take the bike into the local H-D Stealer last Saturday (to my knowledge, few if any good indies in Northern Alabama). I won't hear back with their recommendations until Tuesday. I mentioned that I want to do the hydraulic upgrade and go with the SE-254E cams since I have the K&N on one end and V&H slip ons on the other with the Power Commander in the middle. This presumes that the followers didn't blow metal throughout the engine. I decided to stay away from the gear-driven due to the runout requirements and H-D says they haven't had any need/request to change the hydraulic tensioners...yet.
I'll let you know what the stealer finds during their inspection.
Just spoke with local Stealer...front cam follower in good condition, back one shot. Doesn't appear that any metallic debris when into/through the engine (at this point). Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Will do the hyd camplate/oil pump upgrade. Decided to R&R cams while in there...Dealer recommended 203s (over the 204's) since I'm not running high-end of RPM range alot...he doesn't know me very well... :-)
Don't want to dump alot in at this point so stayed away from hi-lift cams that require new valve springs, etc. Anyone have any thoughts on the "ideal" replacement H-D cam for the bagger of my vintage (2006)?
Thanks!
Trbopumper I ran se 204 in my 2000 flht 88" per my HD mech. I think they might be one of harleys best kept secret. All I had was 204s, a/c & slip on muffler had 43000 on it when I traded it.
