Sorry HD is not full o sh*t on that one. Once you plug anything, other than the lighter into the socket, it stretches the little spring clips on the side of the socket. If you put your lighter into the socket it will heat up ok but upon springing out it will fly all the way out and hit you in the shin as it leaves the bike. So if you smoke and use that lighter, don't plug your GPS or Phone into the lighter socket. FYI new cig lighters elements are about $15. Guess how I know?

Yes, there are probably quite a few places to buy these things.
I just posted a link to one that I found.

You can find them just about everywhere these days.
Wal-Mart, Radio Shack, Best Buy, etc.

There are multiple brands out there too, so it doesn't have to be the same brand I linked too.
Some of them do look to have a little more quality than others.
I have seem them at check out lines at Walgreens too, but they looked a little too cheap (quality wise) for me.

There have been several reports on the forums of the socket being wired with the polarity reversed from the factory. Didn't matter to the lighter but did to other accessories.

YMMV

I plug my electronics in the "lighter" receptacle as well. My question is about the fuse protecting that receptacle that is intended for a lighter. Running low current devices (1 or 2 amps) on a circuit that is protected by a hefty 10 or 15 amp fuse is not the best idea. It would take a lot of current to blow that fuse if something went wrong. Is the lighter protected by its own fuse? I would think so. I might just go and change mine out for lower rated fuse, say 3 amps. What say you?
