So I found this pet carrier that looks like a tour pack on CR. The last time I saw one was 2 yrs ago while doing a search on google & was really interested. After agreeing on a price, the guy comes out of left field and tells me it'll be $150 to ship it from MI, to San Antonio. I'm not sure how much it weighs but it's fiberglass so come on, 150??? I'm thinking that was a bit high. I bought a Tour pack last year & think I paid about 55 to ship from Ohio. I still thought about it, but i guess my min pin stays home now or gets boarded, damn..
The last time I shipped a tour pack, I had ups pack and ship it, it was over 100.00 to pack and ship. He might have been off, but not by as much as you think.
Shipping a box from a commercial address that gets regular pickups is the key. I shipped a big box from Dallas to Moab,Utah from a UPS drop center and got hosed(80bucks). My brother shipped the same basic size box and weight from his business location and it cost $30.00 these UPS drop centers are individually owned and they can charge anything they want and what you will pay.
Yeah you were gonna get ripped off. Hell we ship 70LB tuff boxes (2 feet wide, 1.5 feet tall and over 3 feet long) from Afghanistan to the states via snail mail for under 80 bucks, so no way in hell that dog crate the size of a tourpack would cost 150 to ship 1/2 way across the US. I would pass that deal and keep boarding your dog.
Thanks for the replies, guess I needed a sanity check. As I mentioned earlier, I bought a TP last year and paid less to ship, I planned on cutting it but changed my mind and sold it because I didn't want to cut a perfectly good TP. I also remember spending less shipping 2 loaded trunks from Iraq to Cali and paid less. Just feel bad for the dog, had 2 but one got sick so we had to put him down to stop the suffering (wife and his).

Hey, the shipping charge may have been excessive, but it was disclosed by the seller, and you declined to purchase. So, I don't see how you think you were "almost ripped off."

I questioned my local UPS drop center charging me for "rural delivery" to Surprise,Az. , when I told them BS it's a Phoenix suburb they blamed the computor. Now I use the USPS or Fedex ground.
You can go on UPS's website and calculate the actual shipping cost if you know the origin, destination and size and weight of the package.
You can even tell the seller that you have the shipping covered. You can create a shipment and have ups pick it up at the seller's house and deliver to you. That way you can see the actual cost.
So how bad do you really feel for your dog when less than $150 is why he can't ride with you, as if he really wanted to in the first place?

Craigslist is best for face to fact local transactions. Distant transactions are a recipe for disaster. There is no conflict resolution nor is there any relief mechanism offered if you get screwed.
