1,000 mile service at dealer?
Sometimes I cook my own steak and pay $4 per pound, or sometimes I go out to eat and pay $15. It's up to you if you like to have someone do it for you, or you get satisfaction in doing it yourself. Either way, it's not a ripoff. You are simply paying for a service if you wish.

Doing you own service is no badge of honor, it's an option. I do my own maintenance when I can. However, in the scheme of family, work related travel and other priorities, servicing my bike is low on the list.
Over all, it was not difficult at all to complete and I took my time.
You'll need to use nearly one tube of chassis grease for your steering head, but this much for the first service only, which is about $10 more for a high-quality brand. Subsequent grease jobs will require much less, as they don't fully pack the head at the factory. BTW, why buy a chrome oil filter when you can't even see the dadgum thing down there unless you kneel down and look for it? Black dissipates heat better, too. As always, my 2˘.

My dealer charges $395.00 for the 1000 mile service. No thanks. I'll check the nuts and bolts and change the oils myself (keeping all reciepts). This isn't my first new bike.
