I do it, just incase there is something goofy that someone who works on them all day would notice better than I would.

The way I look at it is this:

Sometimes I cook my own steak and pay $4 per pound, or sometimes I go out to eat and pay $15. It's up to you if you like to have someone do it for you, or you get satisfaction in doing it yourself. Either way, it's not a ripoff. You are simply paying for a service if you wish.

Well said.

Doing you own service is no badge of honor, it's an option. I do my own maintenance when I can. However, in the scheme of family, work related travel and other priorities, servicing my bike is low on the list.

I followed the service list for the 1000 mile stuff. i bought the syn 3 oil and a chrome filter for 100 bucks...i found my shocks loose and my drive belt was rubbing the outside edge of the back pulley. bad enough to shed rubber all over the pipe...oh yeah, i did my first 1000 miles in a week so i promptly rode it down to the shop and let them straighten the rear up on their nickle....it took me about an hour to follow all of the steps. i pumped in about 3 pumps of grease into the sterring neck. i didn't think it would help to over grease it right off the bat

I just did my 1000 mile service. I used the detailed section from the owners manual and a buddy gave me torque specs for some of the other nuts and bolts. I know have the full service manual.

Over all, it was not difficult at all to complete and I took my time.

Shouldn't cost you more than $65 for all that, and that much assuming your engine and tranny oil will cost $10/qt. Use M1 15w50 from Wal-Mart for the engine (5-qt. jug for $23), Castrol GTX 20w50 also from Wal-Mart (needs 38 oz., so $4 x 2) for the primary, a good-quality hypoid gear oil for the tranny (1 qt. @ ~$10), and an HD filter ($9 black) and you're out about $55--and you'll have one quart of M1 and most of the second quart of GTX left over. The o-rings don't need to be changed unless they're damaged. It'll take about an hour to do the oil changes, or at least it takes me that long after cleaning up the mess I always make.

You'll need to use nearly one tube of chassis grease for your steering head, but this much for the first service only, which is about $10 more for a high-quality brand. Subsequent grease jobs will require much less, as they don't fully pack the head at the factory. BTW, why buy a chrome oil filter when you can't even see the dadgum thing down there unless you kneel down and look for it? Black dissipates heat better, too. As always, my 2˘.

My dealer charges $395.00 for the 1000 mile service. No thanks. I'll check the nuts and bolts and change the oils myself (keeping all reciepts). This isn't my first new bike.
