Heading out from southern NJ tomorrow at 6am....May hit some rain in Asheville but it doesn't look that bad...Weather for Maggie Valley looks promising for Sunday & Monday....See you on the road..........
It rains a lot in the area around the Dragon. But I have seen where it dissipates in an hour or so. Bring your rain suit and think of it as part of the adventure.
+1 on the no beer in Robbinsville. Closest we found was at Deals Gap, we just filled our saddlebags up on the way back in the evening. And heaven forbid your in the mood for a whiskey drink anywhere in that area, gotta find a special liquor store for that!
From what I have heard and read (I have no personal experience with the Tail-of-the-Dragon), the Tail-of-the-Dragon is not for the faint of heart or the inexperienced rider. Further, it is not what I would call a "pleasant ride"; it is a grueling ride, with traffic in both directions. If you don't pay attention, bad things can happen very quickly!
Say what!? I guess if you live in the flat lands with all straight roads the "Dragon" might be different for you. But it is no big deal if you ride sane. Then again, living in NW Arkansas, I'm very familiar with curvy roads. The "Dragon" just reminded me of home. If you can't ride roads like the "Dragon" without falling off, you need more wheels under you. Oh yeah, stayed in Maggie Valley at the Super 8 if I'm not mistaken.
If the weather cooperates, I'll be heading that way on Saturday. First night in Asheville, second night at A Holiday Motel. Supposed to be biker friendly, covered parking and a restaurant next door. Low rental rates and the people sound friendly on the phone. Their right down the road from the Wheels Through Time Museum. Monday and possible Tuesday, I'll find a place at the end of the day....
We stayed at "A holiday motel" 2yrs ago when we went to the Dragon. Good little family run motel. Nothing fancy but clean and cheap. Lots of places to eat/drink close by. Very friendly owners with good advice on where to ride and what to see in the area.
There are some nice, affordable motels in the Townsend area. We usually stay in the river stone lodge. it's quiet, they have a campfire every night, and live music on weekends. Not much traffic in Townsend. You can get to all the good bike roads from here.
We are planning a trip to do some of the rides around Cherahola, Tail of the dragon. I see there are biker friendly places to stay. Can anyone recommend a place to stay that lets me park the bike at the end of the day and walk to nearby restaurants, or do some of these biker friendly places have restaurants in them?
TIA
Tom
2 wheel inn in Robinsville on 129. Perfect location for everything Smokies... Linda and Barry are awesome folks as well.
2 wheel inn = big freezer type doors between each room where you can safely store 2 baggers out of the weather each night...

San-Ran Motel in Robbinsville 828 479-3256. They are riders themselves and it is on 129. Have stayed there many times. You will have to make a reservation in advance since they are usually booked.
