Should be the same...

Make sure if you have EFI you get an EFI equipped tank. Using a carb'd tank on EFI, or visa versa, you gotta refit the fuel ports/lines.

you didn't know if you have EFI or not?

if this bike is "new to you" you may want to confirm that it has not been converted- it is not unusual for the early EFI bikes to be converted to carbs

look for a throttle body or carb, or do you hear a fuel pump with switching on before starting motor.

the 2003 uses a different EFI system than the 2001, the tank fittings may be different.

the last 2 digits denote the year the part was introduced- not always the model year the bike may fit... in the case of painted parts the last 2 may also denote a paint or badge style change...when structurally the part is unchanged.
if some cases a part- esp cosmetic or an accessory such as a rack, has a part number which denotes year of introduction, but part will retrofit to earlier model years ( usually on the packaging label)

for a 7 gallon tank, you need to check aftermarket suppliers.

as always with any aftermarket tank..pressure test for leaks before dumping $600 in paint on it

i've been looking at aftermarket suppliers, i talked to a cop since it's actually an flhpi who assured me it would have been carb'd

the way it goes, i bought it online via the copart.com auction for $1750, it had been previously rolled over. i went and picked it up, took it to my friends and have only seen it twice since due to other priorities, i haven't taken the time yet to formally inventory what i need to get it running. in other words... i haven't even started it up yet. after looking over the fiche again, the fuel lines ARE in fact different and i'm not seeing efi extended tanks for that span of years 96-02 i believe. part numbers are the same otherwise the last 2 numbers, i also clicked on the links i posted and turns out they're worthless. i've read sellers notes on ebay for pressure testing though and i'll be painting myself after test and sealing

you need a Guru.

local to you who can help you determine what is right/wrong, good/bad with your new ride.

just a guiding hand- like a 12 step sponsor

someone you can call at 4 am and will show up with a shovel and a bag of lime- no questions asked

eh, i've been wrenchen american and jap bikes about 10 years now, the hard part is i'm building custom and personal not someone else picking the parts and paying what i tell them they need to.

unfortunately.... I AM the 4am shovel guy with propane torch.... and i prefer the cleaning power of fresh oranges to limes

If it is any help, the stretched big tanks I know of are: Daytec, FatKatz, Motorcycle Metal, RWD. Be aware they ain't cheap! Each of them should be able to tell you if they will fit your bike and take EFI.
