Default V&H install project

Guys, I just removed the stock exhaust and my V&H slip ons in preparation for my dresser duals, which will be here tomorrow...will install Sunday, but I have a question

1. How do you remove the exhaust seals? They are seated snugly. I only have 1,000 miles on the bike, but went ahead and bought new seals...seems that everyone here says to replace them.

2. Slap me, but I don't have the service manual and when I removed the flange mounting nuts from the head pipe, they seemed scary lose to me. My daughter could have gotten them off with little work. Should they be that loose...how tight should I put them back on with the V&H because I plan to tighten them alot more than they were.

Thanks guys....and thanks for all the posts....searching/reading allowed me to do this with little to no wrenching experience.

Use a hook style pick or something to reach in and grab it. It WILL get destroyed coming out no big deal. clean up surface area. When you get your new seals put them in the freezer over night and they will shrink just enough to slip right in.
WE NEED PICS TOO!

Tighten the bottom nut on the rear cylinder exhaust flange to 9-18 in=lbs
tighten the top nut 100-120 in-lbs
Final tighten bottom nut 100=120 in-lbs

Tighten the top nut of front cylinder exhaust flange to 9=18 in-lbs
tighten the bottom to 100-120 in-lbs
Final tighten top to 100-120 in-lbs

flange locknut 20-25 ft-lbs
crossover pipe 25-30 ft-lbs
fastners 14-18 ft-lbs

Depending on the kind of gasket you use (coned or factory flat) you can use a 50mm bearing/race set tool (you know the kind that you can get for your rims to set the races/bearings and it has a perfect flange on the edge to be able to set the gasket in nicely without damage.

Ride for 50 miles then re torque

And make sure you read it correctly. Notice where it is INCH pounds and FOOT pounds. Do not get those switched.

And the new V&H pipes should come with new gaskets.
My Power Duals did anyway.

Guys, I appreciate it so much. My neighbor had a pick in his hand but was afraid that it would scratch the metal. I'll make sure to get those from him.........and I appreciate the torque values. Sadly, I always just tighten till tight...one day that may bite me in the butt....guess it's hold-over from my Army days...just tighten till tight.

I'll make sure to post pics...probably Monday.

what's the difference between in-lbs and ft-lbs?

If you use a ft-lbs torque wrench using the values posted, you'll break the stud off.

Foot pounds has 12x the torque of the same numerical inch pounds settings. So as stated if you use foot pounds the bolts either strip or break.
