Dyno tune fixes it right up.
Not without a tuner of some kind, and every new bike I have ridden since 08 has had a pinging issue. The Ultra I rented in Hawaii was awful, pinged and rattled and went into heat management at every stop light.
The only time I've ever heard it on mine was on a very hot day, after I had filled up with 87 octane because the station I was at was out of 93 and the next station was 25 miles away, after the bike as fully warm and I was going up a very small incline at 60 mph in 6th gear and I gave it full throttle all at once. It sounded sorta like a bunch of BB's rattling around in the gas tank if it was empty. Sound seemed to come from that area. Filled up at that next station with good stuff and I've never heard it again.
BBs in the fuel tank, pebbles and fenders...good descriptions that clued me in to my case of pinging. Mine seems to be relegated to low throttle/RPM combos.
Going to back the timing off in this area and see if that gets rid of it. Currently running 3 degrees advance, we'll see what 2 does.
Hopefully this keeps me out of all of this invisible gravel I keep riding through...
You'll know it when you hear it. I have the 12 Ultra Classic with the pinging issue. I also have a lifter making a noise. Low miles on my bike & I want to pull my hair out. Never used the extended warranty on previous new bike purchases, so I declined it on this one. Bad Move! I think I got a lemon? Pinging when the bike is under a load around 2800/3000 rpm. It'll drive you nuts, trust me. I also have a clunking/loud ticking noise (especially when I first start it). Bad lifter is my best guess? The pinging I hear is like a BB in a coffee can & can really be heard when accelerating. If you don't hear this then you're good. Valve train noise is soothing compared to this.
I would say its not always so obvious. I thought my bike was pinging like mad. Sounded like tiny pebbles, happened when I rolled on it 2800-3500, drove me nuts for over a year.
When I got my 107 done, Jamie showed me my pistons. No pinging damage. If it was truly pinging as much as I thought it was, it would have shown damage, but Jamie said it was likely just valve train noise.
