Sounds like a "toes-up" stator to me. If it does prove to be the stator, have 'em check the voltage regulator too.

Dude,
Same thing happened to me at 30 thousand miles. It ended up being the stator. If it is your stator get you a new three phase stator that they now make. Stator cost about 100 bucks, but you have to take the primary cover off and gettin that magnet off is a b_tch without the right tool. Takes about 2 to 4 hours with right stuff.

I had to replace a toasted stator in my EGC at 16,000 miles. I wasn't lucky enough to make it all the way home before the battery gave up. Called wife, removed battery, took it home and charged it, reinstalled and rode it home. I was 30 miles from home when I saw the voltmeter at 10 volts. I watch that a lot closer now!

Theres a black plug near the front of the bike near the regulator. Sometimes that comes loose and the bike runs on the battery alone causing the battery to go dead. Had this happen on my 93 Electra glide.

Someone mentioned earlier about the smell, insinuated it would smell like $hit.
Take the inspection cover off of the primary. If the stator is going bad or gone bad for that matter, it will smell like puke. I mean it will smell like stomache bile. If it doesn't smeel in there it's most likely not the stator.

Howdy all,

Appreciate all the responses and info. Here's the update.....

Was thinking it was probably either the battery or the stator. Charged up the battery a couple of days ago. Took it to Autozone for the free battery test. Test results were "Battery OK, low charge".

Finally got to go out to the barn and do some testing yesterday. Unhooked the Voltage Regulator plug. Put the voltmeteracross the pins on the stator side and fired her up. Only 5 -6 volts at idle, and only up to 9 V at 3000. Uh oh, sounds like the stator. Opened the primary cover and whew, what a smell[:'(].

So I'm sure it's my stator. I'm the wrench on this ride, so I'll learn something new. Worked on getting everything set up for the replacement. Took off the shifters, the left floorboard, and the left passenger footboard. Drained the primary. Will pickup the stator and the gaskets hopefully today, and get started this weekend. I hope to borrow a breaker bar and the 1 1/2 and 1 3/16 sockets. I also have developed a slight oil leak, which I think is the shifter shaft seal, so I'll tackle that while I have the whole primary assembly off.

I'll post some photos as I go, and keep you all posted.

Thanks again for all the info.

Ride on, ride well.

Doug

Sounds like you have everthing under control. If you don't have a manual , it's indespencable. also , I saw a very detailed picture by picture with lots of descriptions on this forum or another , just this week on how to change a stator.
the guy that did it was real good at pointing out the stuff to watch out for.
You might want to do a search to see if you can find it.
Good luck.

Thanks Wally.

I do have the manual, and I use it alot. I'll look for that link. Anyone else know of any picture links of a stator change?

Also, anything else I should change while I have the primary off?

Anyone know the stator part #. I think it should be 29987-02, but also read something about 29987-97B? Hopefully the rotor/magnets are OK, but we'll see when I get in there.

Also, what is the part number for the shifter shaft seal? I think that should be 12067b, but don't know if I'm reading the parts manual correctly. I read somewhere that Cometic (or something like that) makes a better seal. Anyone know, or know where to get cometic seals?

Thanks again all.

Ride on, ride well.

Doug
