Was on a poker run today, about 100 bikes and speeds were about 55 mph- nice weather with 80 degree day.
My PV gauge monitoring the engine head temp was 258-272 got in some slow 35 mph traffic and lights, and stop and go, temps crept up to 283, and the rear jug cut out for heat management.
Turning in to the final destination point we had to wait idling for 3-5 minutes at least.....as other were parking. Engine head temp got to 348 before I could park and shut down.
Felt like i was dismounting from a frying pan, could have cooked up some eggs. I was wondering about how long my bike could have sustained prolonged idle and what it was it was doing to the oil, it's not like I wanted to see where the temp would have gone.
I read on here someplace that HD tests the bikes and lets them idle for 24 hours?
So.... I wonder what the temps are on the " test bikes" if it's true that that is what they do to bikes in testing.
I can also see the feature and benefit of having Wards parts works engine cooling fan.
Similar situation for me yesterday. Hit the highway for a ride to my sons place. Hit a dead stop then stop and go crawl for 15 minutes. Not monitoring head temps but eitms never cut in. Air temp about 80. FCS fans were purring...
While waiting to park, you can twist the throttle the wrong way a put the bike in limp mode. I this is useless info, I apologize in advance.
Really, the only useless thing is the eitms mode in general. Doesn't really help. The only thing that helps is air over the jugs. Bike moving or a fan will accomplish that.
I am running some XiED's from http://www.nightrider.com/parts/. I can tell a big difference in engine temps. Best $112 I have spent on my bike.
To be honest, I have not set thru sustained traffic or stops since in put them in but from the riding I have done it runs much cooler. Noticeably cooler. I was sceptical but willing to try them after lots of reading.
Big difference is this, when I do get the engine warm, it seems to cool much quicker once I get it moving. Before adding them, once it got hot, it took a long time of running at speed to get the temps back down.
I just last week bought two ultras,, one electra glide and one road glide,, the first thing is to get rid of the cats and install the xieds...it runs tons cooler...
