My 06 only came with one headset & I'm wanting another for my girlfriend's helmet. I've heard there are better setups then the stock HD so who has the best quality and also the best price?
My wife wears a half helmet and there is only one manufacture that makes one that I know of. J&M is what she has. It is really top quality however you pay for that quality. They are a very good company to deal with. Had a problem with a cord a few years ago. Sent it back to them they replaced it I only paid for shipping and the cord was about 4 years old.
The downside to the J&M headset is the mic. To communicate with the passenger, you either need to use the PTT switch (which keys the CB) or yell into the mic (which defeats the purpose) to get it to break VOX. I sent my J&M headset back and bought another Harley headset. The Harley headset speakers are not as good as the J&M speakers. One thing that helps the Harley speakers, is to place a spacer behind the speaker to move it close to the ear. This produces much better bass. I have been toying with the idea of using the J&M speakers and splicing them into the Harley headset.
I and my wife both have Harley headsets on our '06 Ultra but I have recently been thinking about some new Arai helmets complete with J&M headsets. Can you not adjust the sensitivity so you don't have to yell into the mic to get it to break the VOX? I would think that would get rid of the problem. I'm also kicking the Bluetooth helmet idea around. Just got a new Garmin Zumo gps.
While we are on the subject; and I was thinking of upgrading to J&M also, with my HD set I get a cracking sound in my left ear speaker when the FM radio is off and just theCB oncan anyone offer any advice as to how to resolve that?
When riding with my group, I also notice the folks with the HD set are louder and more plain talking to us than those with J&M...bummer. Just doesnt seem there is a perfect anything from anybody.
I found that when I bought new helmets for the wife and I the new ones had locations under the covers in the ears just for headset placement. Our older helmets (same brand) did not have this feature. When I placed them in these they do sound better, still not like using headphones on your stereo, but they do sound better.

No. That is the issue we had with J&M. After speaking to their customer service (they are very nice people), they finally conceded that the mic doesn't work that good for breaking VOX - no matter what you set the sensitivity to. The person that engineered the mic stands behind the way he built it and swears that it works great â and it does IF you use the PTT switch. But that is not an option when you are running the CB as well.

Sweet. That is on the list. I hope the price keeps falling.
I don't have any problems with my J&M mic, once I correctly adjusted it. The J&M headset is far superior than the HD, great sound with intercom and the stereo.
I'm curious as to what adjustments did you do (other than adjust VOX)? Are you running it on the Harman/Kardon Advanced Audio (that comes on the 07's)?
i like the J&M best for the music sound quality. the HD set is okay, butwe have full face helmets that we use on trips and the mic mounts in the front of the helmet with the large wire arm. I had a 95 Ultra and tried to use the J&M on the 06 Ultra, it didn't work correctly. J&M said to send the headsets to them and they would correct the problem. I'll know in a few weeks.
