I guess my question boils down to, having mostly tamed the ping, do I need the PV?
Seems to me the headers and air cleaner would tend to induce it more...unless the closed loop "XiED-assisted" FI compensates.
The PV gives you the optimum control over fuel and timing to manage your tune. I can't comment about all of the devices available but I'll bet you FuelMoto can help a lot. I also know first hand Jamie and co. won't sell you things you don't absolutely don't need. Having said that they do sell the Powervision because it is a very good product and they do there best to explain all of the benefits. Your budget and future plans will greatly influence you as well.
If ya really want a header rather than de-cating yours, Fuelmoto is a good choice. While ya may not "need" a Power Vision it may be the best choice out there right now and will allow better performance than xvids or micro tuner. I'd just bite the bullet and get the header, A/C and PV from FM with the proper map. Then whenya spring for slip-on or more ya are set. All the while enjoying the better performance.
Changed the oil this afternoon, and took a short ride to warm it up, another longer ride to check for leaks (none). My right heel gets uncomfortably hot at street speeds. That heat, more than anything else, is what I'm really focused on curing. And the rides today reminded me. Up until June, i had a second bike that I rode more, so the Ultra wasn't getting all of my saddle time. Sold that one, and "hot hot hot" is not gonna get it, as far as the cat is concerned.
So the FM header, I think, is a definite. And since I'll be de-restricting the exhaust, figure I'll add the air cleaner. If it pings a bunch, or exhibits other symptoms of lean behavior, I'll spring for the tuner. The Power Vision looks like the one I'd want. But I think I'll check out how it behaves and see if I can get by for now.
Also, despite street and freeway speeds and temp at over 100 F, I got no pinging this afternoon. It's getting better and better in that regard. Power is just dandy, but I'd settle for a little more. Don't plan on doing the cams, so the conservative approach might work.
I might wait until it cools off to do the work, though. I'm pooped, having trimmed some trees before taking on the oil change (and clean-up!!).
Fuel moto 2-1-2 headers are as good as it gets . They beat the heck out of so called true duals for ease and proper tune.
Xied's are a band aid , I used them on my 07 for a bit while I figured out where I wanted to go.
Just cutting out the cat results in a loss of torque cheap but nothing close to doing it right.
Been there done that also.
if you want a second choice, try looking at the fullsac sportpipe. they take a stock headerpipe, cut out the plenum with cat and weld an entirely new one in, ceramic coat it both inside and out, and weld a nice little 'bracket' for the heat shield to sit tight against. and it's only $279 exchange. $349 if you want to keep your old one. dynos very nicely as well...
From: 12 year, Colombia, 4 years Mexico, currently In Kuwait, but Boston is HOME!!
I've got a 2010 FLHTK and running Fuel moto ceramic coated headers, Fuel moto air, Tthundermax fuel management, V&H monster rounds, woods 555 cams and fuel moto pushrods. Bike has ran great ever since and had it this way for two years. I love it. Lower heat, no ping whatsoever and the over-all power is very good. Crusing speed on the highway here in Mexico at 3100 rpm in 6th gear is 90 MPH and back home 2500 at 80. SO I cant complain. Ride safe.
