Just recently sold my night train and looking to upgrade . I have a few people telling me to stay away from the 96" because its crap And go 103.
They say the 96 runs hotter and no passing power and there's a whine in the tranny at cruising speed. Looking to get a lil more input before I buy. Is there a difference?
Same Cylinders just different bore. A 103 is a boared out 96 Hot yes air cooled v twin motors run a little hot. No matter if it's a 96 or 103. If I was in Market for a used street glide I would look at 2009 and up if it was me. I wouldn't worry if it was a 96 or 103 because easily make it whatever you want.
I have a 96.. it was hot as hell untill I added the Xieds..My leg gauge gives me a thumbs up... Ur gonna find good deals on either engine now that the 14's are out

And a 103 would have been just as hot.
The 103 does have a factory oil cooler, but you can add that to the '96 easily enough.
There are tens of thousands of these engines on the road running just fine.
My '11 Street Glide is a 96 CI, and it runs just fine.
As mentioned above, you can make it what you want.
If you find the "right" bike (good condition, good price, right color, etc), I sure wouldn't let it being a 96 CI keep me from buying it.
hi! I have a 07 flhx sg an mine runs real good, agains the 103 an strong agains the 110 motors s.e. stage 1, fullsac true dual kit and baffels in cvo mufflers, an xiieds, the true duals cooled it off a lot, then when I put xieds it cooled it off a lot. personally the difference on the newer models the frame, mounts an wheel sizes, are nice. but the throttle by wire, an parade mode I can do without the prices are more after 09 depends on what you want to spend and what wheels you would prefer, not much choice for a wide rear on 08 and earlier. good luck bud
