Had the bike serviced before the trip, and had them check the cam tensioners. About 48k on it now. Changed the oil before the trip at 45k. Has stage 1 with the k&N, Rhinehart true duels, and the SE tuner from back in the day (2001). NO problems prior to this.
Stopped for the night in Cheyenne, WY. Partly because the dealer is 3 miles from our hotel and partly due to the hurricane like storm hitting Denver and Ft. Collins.
I had a similar problem too, the fuel line from the pump to the "petcock" or quick connect on the tank can get a pin-hole in it pumping gas back into the tank instead of to the motor where it belongs. The part is about 60 bucks at the dealership. I did mine myself so not sure what it will cost you with labor if this is your issue.
If you have a cracked fuel filter or something along those lines you can easily check this by turning on the ignition switch. Normally the system will pressure up to where it is supposed to within 5 seconds and then shut itself off. Don't start it up, just turn the ignition on and you can hear the pump. If it does not shut off, you likely have a leak inside the gas tank which you can sometime see or hear by removing the cap and looking inside when you hit the ignition switch.
Hmm... good thought. Would this make it stutter at the 2900-3500 rpm range?
Yep, it could actually. As the fuel pump delivers more fuel it sounds like its not all going where it should, and as it increases pressure/flow it's finally getting enough past the leak to clear up. However, it will eventually crack or break completely and then you be stuck like chuck!
Had a friend a few weeks ago with the same problem, problem with the fuel line in the gas tank, was pumping fuel back into the tank because of a hole in one of the lines.

Reads like a starved for fuel related issue.
If fuel tank is full to the absolute maximum does it respond the exact same way?
Reason: if leak is not too bad the fuel outside of the line creates a little pressure against hole in the line and with a full tank the problem is less. More than one person has ridden home having to fuel-up every 60 miles or so with this problem.
Is there any loose tank liner floating in the tank?
The sock filter is very good but if a big piece of liner blocks it a fuel starvation issue would result...Thinking fuel line in tank..looks like it might be #19 in diagram #62142-01 ($19).
At Ronnies look at top "OEM parts finder" then scroll down to bottom of page to "motorcycle" then go to motorcycle information. http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche.....asp?make=hdmc
just replaced mine last week. figured i had a problem, idle was terrible and had a little stutter.. went with new check valve, high pressure side and while i had it out, new fuel filter and fuel pump. I got the fuel pump on line for 69.00 and it's ethanol friendly. the valve i got from Ronnie's along with the filter. Just the filter was 80 bucks. if you buy the kit, it's like 165.00...the only extra things in the kit is a c-clip and hose from the pump to the filter. got one of those with the pump....since you're on the road, probably just replace the line and get home. i would replace the filter and and pump shortly...my filter with 58000 was nasty and hard to blow thru it...oh yeah,,,,you'll need 10 screws and new gasket.....
