Hey guys , just curious , if anyone has had this happen . It has happened twice to me on my 06 FLHTI , fist time I got stuck in traffic on a 90 degree day for about 3 miles stop and go , she was very hot and I thought that was it , now this time it was about 75-80 degrees in traffic stop and go again , for about 2 miles and the same thing happened she didn't want to idle , had to stay on throttle a little bit , other than that she runs fine . Anyone else have the same issue ? Also this is a stock motor , exhaust , also fuel injected .
My 08 sportster started doing that. I switched over to ethanol free premium about a month ago and the problem went away. I'm now getting 10% + better mpg as a result.
might want to look at the fuel line inside the tank. earlier models would get pin holes in the pressure side and cause that problem..not sure if you've got one or 2 fuel line to the tank...but worth checking.....is it worse when the tank is low of fuel? sometimes you can hear it when the tank is low; turn the ing. on with the gas cap off. should hear the pump prime and sometimes with the small holes and the tank low on fuel, you can hear the gas swirling around in the bottom...
I assume a 06 does not have a lot of miles. Before you jump to conclusions, go thru a couple tanks of ethanol gas (10% will absorb a touch of water if you got some bad or old gas) Then try plugs since the heat the first time could have gotten the plugs so hot, they glazed over a little and it's like insulation on the tip. The IAC is just an air valve and can go bad, but the port is large and a lot of other obvious things to check before going there. It's rare it truly can stick, and if it does, there's little you can actually do to the sealed motor in it. And you can actually destroys it with carb cleaner by driving black carbon up past the o-ring seal in it. If you want to check it, remove the filter and look up into front top of the throttle body. Cycle your ignition on and off. You will see it drop down and plug the opening and key on and it will go into the idle position.
