I use this and keep it on my bike in case of I have to recharge anything on route. I like it every time I have used it. Only charged ipod/iphone so I can't answer your questions about amps and bigger drawing utilities.
I use and recommend a dual USB port no less than 2 amp.
Look at the amp ratings!
Smartphones, tablets, etc require no less, especially if you charge them in use.
Many elcheapo ports only put out 0.5 amp; your unit will actually run down trying to charge with it.
Got mine on Amazon, less than 10 bucks.
Many are very small, takes up very little space.
All kinds of options...
Like mentioned above I use the griffin dual port on mine and you can readily find them at Radio Shack, Wal-Mart etc. 5 watts/volts ~ 1 Amp per port. Easiest solution cause you just plug it into your factory cigarette lighter unless you smoke while riding and feel you need the cigarette lighter more.

+1 on the Griffin. Small and convenient. There are similar devices out there that can be found just about anywhere that sells chargers including a lot of gas stations.
