Mine cranks over ok but it does act like it's flooded with fuel. If I leave it about five minutes it'll crank right up. Sometime it will fire right up when hot but if I first twist the throttle at all it takes a whilst to start when hot. Must be a rich condition. Any advise on how to resolve?

P.S. I hear on a more powerful starter. My next purchase but I'm Leary of all the different high torque starters I see on EBay. Is there a good brand you would recommend?

You can probably set the idle screw leaner and check the float level to make sure it isn't too high. You can also try not letting it idle before cutting the engine off. It can load up and cause it to flood. I haven't looked at the idle circuit on motorcycle carbs, but on cars with bigger cams you can hold the throttle open 1/8 round or so and it will let the idle circuit lean out. Also clear the engine by holding around 2000 rpms and cutting the switch soon as you close the throttle and see what happens. Just guessing. Hotter plugs are easier to start also.

There is a confusing range of starters available and some of them are eye-wateringly expensive. Bearing in mind the stock Harley ones are also used widely in autos, we should not need to spend a lot. I bought a 2kW from DB Electrical and received it here in the UK in 3 days flat! Excellent service and they currently have almost 10,000 starters for sale on US Ebay!!!!
