Default Hard bag mod help

I'm hoping one of you customizers will be able to offer some instruction, or point me to someone who can do this for me.

Several weeks ago my father passed away. I've been trying to figure out a way I can honor him that would combine his service during the Vietnam war and his love of motorcycles. I decided that maybe I would want to do a mini type shadow box containing a shell casing from the honor guard at his funeral, the Indiana Patriot Guard Challenge coin I received and at least a mini Big red One badge/pin and if there's room a mini Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart, the medals would be left off if there isn't room.

Here's the hard part I want the shadow box inlaid flush into the back of one of my saddle bags. I realize this would be very tough to do but it is ABS plastic so I'm thinking I should be able to cut out the opening and then "weld" the box into the opening. The trouble is I have no idea how to do such a thing. I am a very handy person and I have full confidence I would be able to accomplish this with some good instruction.

Can anybody give me some direction here?

Thanks,
George

I haven't any idea but sure it can be done. My comment is I think this is a very good notion to honor your father. God Bless

Subscribed. As a vet who got spit on when I came home in '70, I TRULY appreciate what you want to do for your dad. Do you have a body shop that works on Corvettes nearby?

I wish you luck friend. Godspeed to your dad.

I bought a plastic welder from USC and experimented quite a bit with different techniques and filler rods. The best rod was the parent material from a scrap saddlebag, reinforced with stainless mesh and using Fusor 142 and 114 to topcoat/finish the repair area. This one has been on my bike all summer and shows no signs of failure. I also successfully repaired a tour pack using the same method and am confident in the procedure.

I'm assuming you are using a black 'plastic' saddlebag and not the grey 'SMC' bag, totally different methods to repair.

Hope this helps, good luck with the mod.

Man that repair looks awesome, thanks 1CdnHD for the pics. Going to pick up a plastic welder today and some material to practice with. Also going to order the mini medals today and start designing.

George.

Thanks, I'm going to pick up some supplies today and start working on it while I'm waiting on the mini medals to arrive. will be ordering them today as well. I'll post some pictures when I'm done, if it turns out good.

First I want to say to you You son are an awesome young man, From this old Viet Nam Vet Thank your dad for his service.
Next I used to build hot rods and the best one I ever built was a 1932 Chevy Woodie wagon. The front fenders were fiberglass and there was a product(and old age has set in cause I can't remember the name) that I installed the turn signals into that mounted from the back side but the best part of this was the front was a plexi glass sheet that stuck through the opening and after you glassed it in you sanded it off until it was flush with the fender then when you masked it and painted the fender the clear plexi showed the inside perfect.
I think something like this would be perfect for what you want to do.
I do a lot of playing around with this kind of stuff and what you are going to do I think is an awesome idea. If you need help with an idea PM me and I will give you my phone # and help if I can.

Thanks Santajim, though I'm not such a young man anymore . I'll have to look into this product as an alternative. Right now the plan is to make a box from ABS, if I can find some, and recess that using a lexan or Lucite cover. Ordered the mini medals today they should be in next week. And to keep things interesting my bags are custom painted so I have NO room for error.

I am the son of a WW2 vet still alive and a father of 3 who are currently serving...I would not want to lose or have stolen any of those pieces. why not have the pieces photographed like they were in there and then have it printed or painted where you would like.
