On my 2012 Street Glide I have a decatted headpipe with 3.5" Rinehart slip ons. Would like more sound. Is there any difference going with a aftermarket headpipe over the decatted pipe? Would it be better going to true duals? I know I want 4" slip ons. Any info would be great. Don't want to spend the money for a new headpipe or true duals if I am not going to see a difference.
What does "more sound" mean to you? The 4" slip on will give you a deeper, lower tone (which is what I have) than the 3.5" Rineharts that all my buddies have on their bikes. That being said, their bikes are lounder than mine, but mine has a deeper, more throaty rumble.
Define "more sound".
FWIW - We all have the 103" motor, so the experiences should be pretty similar.
I have the 4" Rineharts and VH power duals and can't imagine needing more sound. The thing is just pure deep rumbling sweetness! I have a friend with a decated head pipe and VH slip ons and my combination is much deeper and just a bit louder. His is much more tinny sounding where mine is very deep tone like thunder...lol
Plenty of "How To" threads on removing ( gutting ) the element in the header pipe. If the only change you will make is what you have mentioned I'd go for the removal of the element as opposed to a complete new head pipe. Yes it will make a difference on the sound level. Your Rineharts are good mufflers and with the catalytic element removed 3.5' would be fine. Changing to true duals is a choice you have to make ... Generally a minimal loss of low end torque when going to a true dual system ... just my .02 cents worth.
The OP said he already has a decatted head pipe on the bike. And wanted to know if swapping to a VH power dual or FM 2-1-2 or such would make the bike louder. In my experience it will change the tone and be just slightly louder. It's not going to be a world of difference but the power duals with 4" Rineharts would be a big difference between his current set up with stock pipe and 3.5" Rineharts. I think the combination of parts really define the sound.
