Default Adjustable rider back rest vs. rider back rest

Gang, I'm sorry about continuing to make repeated posts but I'm tired of buying accessories and then not liking them or having full knowledge.

I want a rider's back rest and not fully sure of the difference between the adjustable rider backrest mounting kit (part # 52596-09A) vs. the rider backrest (part # 52587-09).

With the first, what exactly is adjustable?

If for example, I wanted to remove the seat and from time to time switch to a solo seat, will it matter which back rest kit I have installed?

What I don't want is, a back rest that'll force me to sit in a full straight up position but one where I can adjust to my comfort. Based on that, I'm not sure if that's the difference with part #52596-09A.

Regretably, I called my shop and the guy in parts was not able to give a good answer. He couldn't articulate the difference with the two.

Thanks all!

According to the website the NON adjustable backrest ONLY fits a CVO Road King for 14 and 13. Fits NOTHING for 2012. And then from 2008 back.

The adjustable one fits most of the touring models from 2014 back to 2009. So for your '12, it appears you need the adjustable one. And I don't know this for a fact but I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts the mounting hardware would have to come off if you wanted to put an aftermarket seat on it once in a while....

Adjustable has a release lever to move it forward and backward slightly to "adjust" for comfort, also a nice feature to compensate for different clothing and change positions on long rides. Get the adjustable version.

I have part # 52900-09A. It doesn't have the adjustable lever, but there is an allen headed nut that changes the angle and can make it closer or farther back.

If you get the adjustable putting a solo seat will require you to remove the backrest braket....it'd be a PITA. Go to the HD web page and look up the part numbers in the on line catalog and you will be able to see the two back rest and it will give you a better understanding of what people are tying to get across.

I have the adjustable driver's backrest. I know that on mine that is a release button on the backrest that allows you to remove the the backrest from the adjustable mounting hardware that is bolted to the frame. I was told by the parts salesman that it would all HD seats for my "11 Street Glide would work. The docking hardware mounted to the frame is too time consuming to take on and off just to put a seat on the bike that the backrest wasn't designed for but that's just me. By the way for me the adjustable driver's backrest was a good mod for the bike and I don't ride anywhere without it.

You must have looked in the wrong place.

StreetGlide style backrest (goes well with the stock seat)

I have the one above, and my wife has the adjustable one. When I ride her bike, I'm constantly messing with the adjustment.

Mine feels more solid, and less "bouncy". And it is adjustable forward and back and up and down..... you just can't do it "on the fly" .... To adjust for height, squeeze the rails together and pick one of three holes. For forward and back, you have to take the seat off and move the hardware.

The above is the adjustable mounting kit 52596-09A

The below is the non adjustable mounting kit 52589-09A

Either will fit your 2012 SG.

Both will need to be removed to use a solo seat.

Personal preference. I use and like the adjustable model.

Hmmmm... Just did a search on the two part numbers from OP and that's what came up....

I have the first. There is a little lever installed under the left side of the seat. While riding, you can easily adjust the backrest forward and back through an infinite number of angles within a limited range. IMHO this is a must. You can change your riding position rather than being locked into one position. Removing this mechanism would be a PITA though.

The other one can only be adjusted when off the bike by removing and reinserting the backrest into different fixed holes.
