The first mod I do is change the airbox/backing plate to allow better breathing because that's traditionally been the biggest restriction, like 50% more improvement that adding slip-ons. However I believe I've seen here the new style airbox on the 2014's is not as restrictive so little to nil gained by changing it (on a stock motor).
Nice to hear the fl-af-xied-10 functions well!
The 4" pipes already added a significant lean condition to your fuel mixture, if the XIED solved that then more power to you....but, if you further increase the lean mixture by adding more oxygen with a stage 1 AC (air cleaner) the XIEDs may not be able to compensate enough fuel to solve the popping condition if it returns. Thats why you were told to quit while your ahead...hope this helps.
If the cat is still in, there will still be lots of back pressure. The VIED's are adjustable, don't think the XIED's is. If you remove the cat you will lose some bottom end torque and possibly get more noise then you want with your slip ons. If your not gonna remove the cat and like the stock breather cover, why not wait till K&N comes out with a filter.
As info, I had the stage 1 download done with a D&D slip-on and SE stage 1 AC put on my 2013 FLD when I bought it new, It had decel pop like crazy. I installed the XiED and got all the benefits as advertised, no change on the pop. Fast forward to my 2014 Road King, stage 1 down load done with V&H slip-on's and stage 1 SE AC no decel pop. I put on the XiED from the old bike and it runs great.

I'm not trying to be smart assed here, but you are going to have to explain how in the world a pair of slip-on mufflers, behind that catalytic converter would EVER change anything related to mixture. You said lean condition, which it may be, but mufflers alone will make no difference in the AFR especially with the cat in the way.
